  Martins Deli

Morning everybody. Surviving this humidity patch okay? Looks like they say the weekend will cool off in the high 60′s low 70′s…perfect for planting flower, yard work, cleaning out the garage as well as a long bike ride/bar hop and picnics with good friends. Can you tell I have lots planned for the three days off?

Today I just wanted everyone to know about Martin’s Deli in Rocky River…in case you’ve never been in there. It’s a little deli that sits off of Detroit Rd near the high school field. The other day when I was prepping for a road trip so I stopped in to pickup a handful of made to order deli sandwiches and some snacks but to my surprise found a wonderful wine shop as well.

Such assortment, very helpful staff and even a row of chilled wines…perfect for the last minute summer party. If you’ve never been into Martin’s plan to swing in this weekend for some picnic supplies… and when the Heinen’s parking lot looks just too much to bear you can get your malbec fix just up the street! :) Happy Tuesday everybody.

  New Wine Bar!

When you are with a close friend do you ever wish the conversation and the time spent together would never end? I do. Sometimes I sit back and realize that I’m growing older, (perhaps because my birthday is looming)  and that we are ALL growing older together and what makes life so precious is the good relationships we make while we are around…Is that me or the wine talking? :)

The other night myself and one of my closest friends had the opportunity to visit the newly opened Battery Park Wine Bar and let me just say, it’s AMAZING. Everything from the adorable retail wine “boutique” in the front of the space (I’m thinking it will be my place to go for that emergency-snow-must-have-a-bottle-of-wine-run) to the beautiful wood bar made from repurposed local timbers, no details has been overlooked.

I’m actually looking forward to going back to try out their yummy menu, it seriously looked wonderful, the perfect pairing to add to any wine drinking evening out type of munchies.

I guess the only bone I have to pick with them is this whole “Y.O.L.O.” thing? (on their menus, mailers, etc.) As a designer and brand consultant I think they are having a bit of new business identity crisis.

“The name of the restaurant is called The Battery Park Wine Bar, but we wanted to call it YOLO, but we couldn’t name it that because someone else has that name” they explained to us.

“What does “YOLO stand for?”  “You Only Live Once!” I smiled and agreed that YOLO is a wonderful wine bar concept, however my professional experience and opinion must kick in on this one… moving forward, I will be referring to the bar as “The Battery Park Wine Bar; where you only live once.” (rolls right off your tongue like…sorta like a Pinot)

The interior still has the smell of new construction, but the warmth of the bricks and the charming employees made it seem like this establishment has been there for years and years. This weekend grab a group and go explore this new find…located under the Battery Park smoke stack.

  Wine & Goat Cheese (06/12-13)

Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13th, 2010

I don’t know about you, but a good glass of Malbec and a spoonful of goat cheese might be my ultimate favorite “snack.”
This weekend at Heinen’s they will be pairing Northeast Ohio’s Mackenzie Creamery with complimentary beer & wine. There is even a discount $1.00 off each flavor (except truffle flavor), which is a great savings if you are feeling like stocking up! Entirely free to taste, I’ll try to schedule my grocery shopping time to coordinate with my own personal “happy” hour!
See you at Heinen’s!

  Girl Bands Rule! (8/20)

TONIGHT, Thursday August 20th, 2009

Ever thought about stating that neighborhood girl band? I’ve always wanted to come home and rock out on a drum set complete with gold shiny cymbals at the end of a day.

If you’re thinking of how you could round up your musical team, stop by Visible Voice Bookstore & Wine Bar in Tremont for tonight’s book signing of The Girls’ Guide to Rocking: How to Start a Band, Book Gigs, and Get Rolling to Rock Stardom, by Jessica Hopper.

This highly informational and inspiring do-it-yourself resource will guide girls toward their rocker dreams. It will also appeal to the young-at-heart who dream of being a rock star and readers and researchers of girl culture (moi!).

Good Morning America selected The Girls’ Guide to Rocking as one of their top summers reads for teens “For anyone looking to dive in, this book is a great place to start.”—Joan Jett

  Supper @ Gatherings Kitchen

On any given Friday you can find the windows of 17004 Madison Avenue aglow. The aromas of a busy gourmet restaurant are rolling out into the street. The low rumble of excitement and chatter fills the air…it’s time for “Supper.”

As a fellow Lakewood-ite, I would like to introduce and welcome the new business Gatherings Kitchen to the ‘hood. The brain child of Chefs Ruth and Doug, Gatherings Kitchen is a boutique catering business by day, but when Friday nights roll in, let the cooking fun begin!

Ever wanted to learn how to dismantle an artichoke, make hand-rolled gnocchi or “french” a lamb? This is the place to go. Each Friday a lucky twelve “chefs” meet at the kitchen for a culinary exploration. Nothing too difficult, just recreational cooking at its best. After a solid two hours in the kitchen, students move into the storefront dining room (which features a custom-made farmhouse style table and a vintage crystal chandelier) where they are served the fruits of their labor, course by course, by Chefs Ruth & Doug.

Supper is BYOB, so bring some spirits to share with your fellow foodies. You are guaranteed to walk away with a few knife tricks in your pocket, a full belly and a handful of new Cleveland friends.

The new June menu has arrived at Gatherings Kitchen (South American Cuisine.) Spaces are filling up fast, so grab your friends and sign up together. $50 per person. 6:30-10:00pm-ish!

  Warm thoughts & wine.

I don’t know if I have ever mentioned to you that I am a big fan of red wine? An evening in with a good bottle of Pinot and great conversation with friends is such a luxury. A small glass (or two) of Malbec with dinner makes for a great evening. A glass of Beaujolais before bed, keeps away the nightmare-monster….or maybe that’s because I never can drink just one. :)

Well, in any case while I was trying to think “warm thoughts,” and as you have already figured out, my thought today (thought #2) is…drink more wine to stay warm (such a good excuse).

We all have our favorite wine hot spot, and with wine there is something for every taste. From the selection at World Market to a good bottle at the Market Avenue Wine Bar, we all have our own unique style. Below are a couple of the real deals, steals and tastings in the area to keep you warm (or pleasantly buzzed). Hope you enjoy!

D’Vine Wine Bar (www.dvinewinebar.com)
All Wednesday nights are “Flight Nights,” which means half off select wine flights from 4-7pm. D’Vine is located in the Warehouse District at 836 West St. Clair Avenue (between West Sixth & West Ninth on the north side of the street).

Pre-registration is requested. Contact Customer Service at 440.331.3830. $25 per person. 6:30-8:00 pm. Rocky River location at 19219 Detroit Road.

Flying Fig (www.theflyingfig.com)
Looking for a real steal of a deal? Then look no further than The Flying Fig and their selection of $5 dollar wine happy hour (4:30-7pm) specials. Nestled in the heart of Ohio City at 2523 Market Avenue, Cleveland.

Wine Bar Rocky River (www.winebarrr.com)
Visit the Wine Bar Rocky River every Wednesday from 6-7pm to learn about various wines and how to pair wine with food. Each Flight School includes 5 wines paired with 5 food tastings. $20 plus tax & gratuity. This little wine oasis is tucked away at 1313 Linda Street, Rocky River.

Visible Voice (www.visiblevoicebooks.com)
What’s black and white and red all over? A book that has a glass of Merlot spilled all over it (sorry, bad joke!). But seriously, if you are an avid book lover (for words or pictures) than this independent bookstore has the perfect pairing for you. Order a glass at the register than wander through their delightful selection of area authors and national must-reads. The actual Wine Bar is open: Tues-Fri: 3:30-10pm, Sat: 1-10pm, Sun: 3-8pm. Visible Voice is located at 1023 Kenilworth, Cleveland.
