giveaway : Art Supplies from Pat Catans

Good morning CLE and happy Tuesday to ya!

Many of you might know this about me but I am a total art geek. Thanks to my Mom, I spent my childhood growing up with a craft box under my bed. My Saturday mornings were spent in painting classes with other “free spirit”kids and by the time I reached college I was attending gallery openings in my down time, hanging out in the painting lofts of fellow art school students and taking extra credits in anything from silk screen to stained glass. As a professional graphic designer I feel lucky each day that I get to create visual inspiration for a living.   West Side Skates

While I can’t say I have EVER attempted to skate on a skateboard before I LOVE to stop into West Side Skates to admire the goods.

As a designer (my other job, wink!) I am drawn to amazing color combinations, to patterns, to textures, type and illustration and this store is like walking into a vast collection of art and design specimens.  I almost feel like an adult kid in a candy store, the stuff is over the top “rad!”

Besides “decks” and wheels, the store also has an incredible line of hip shoes and detailed constructed clothing. Again, the colors and patterns and quality of fabrics is not too be messed with, these skater kids (or skater adults!) sure do have a thing for style.

Even skaters have a love for the cute and clever don’t you think? Keep Calm and ROLL Away, how cute!

I’m serious though, if you are ever in the market for a new pair of Ray Bans, a bold pair of sneaks, perhaps some fun stickers, hats or a chic Nixon watch, go visit West Side Skates they will hook you up. It’s really incredible!

  Native Cleveland

Last weekend I found myself in the cutest, “pro-Cleveland” art & t-shirt store called “Native Cleveland,” located near the Beachland Ballroom.

I was wondering around the Waterloo Arts Festival enjoying the sights (belly dancers, stilt walkers and many a hipster), sounds (everything from hip hop, rock and “coffee house”) and the sunshine (well, it was pretty overcast but the sun did make an appearance or two.)  The highly stylized window displays, the nautical t-shirts graphics and all of the people shopping in the store called was calling my name.

Everything about the space from the skylight to the “display stage” to the adorable art…this store is the total package. Oh, and don’t forget the amazing CLE Clothing Co. T-shirts they sell, awesome. From a designers perspective these shirts hit the nail right on the head, quirky and fresh with a twist. While I purchased a shirt as a gift, I am currently lusting over the Lake Erie Yacht Club v-neck. it must be mine! (Note* I love everything “nauti”)

So, if you are ever in need of a great gift, a piece of art or an amazing CLE t-shirt, grab yourself a coffee, hop in the car and make your way to Native Cleveland you won’t be disappointed! Great store, you should be really proud!

  fashion show @ unique thrift!

What can I say, I LOVE to swing into “Unique” on Lorain Ave (close to St Ignatius.) Besides the funky smell and the whining fluorescent light bulbs the store is filled with possibilities, “projects” and memories of fashion past (not a bad thing.)

This Saturday “Unique” is hosting it’s first ever “Spring Fashion Show.” I have NO idea how this event will go down but I do know it will be worth stopping in from 1-3pm just for the…A) special markdowns, B) the people watching will be incredible and C) did you know “Unique” offers FREE coffee for all shoppers?

I know this might sound a bit sassy, but truly I adore this store. I can’t tell you the number of “finds” I’ve scored there. Everything from a traditional Burberry trench to a fondue pot, from various silk kimono robes to numerous picture frames perfect for spray painting. The list goes on and on.

Cleveland, let’s support this store, stop in on Saturday to find out what the “hottest looks for spring & summer will be!”  See you there.

Road Trip : Columbus, OH in Lucky Magazine

Good morning Cleveland. Time to rise and shine and get pumped for a new week! It’s cold out there, but at least the sun is shining. A great excuse to bundle up and wear a hundred layers.

Over the weekend I tried to stay in a bit and get through the stack of skimpy January magazines that had accumulated at the foot of my bed. Everything from Town and Country to Shape, to Country Living (even though I wouldn’t describe my style as “country,” the magazine is real sweet) to Lucky Magazine.

This month Lucky featured Columbus as a great place to shop! It’s only a two hour drive from Cleveland, and I sorta agree…shopping High Street might be a favorite Saturday road trip of mine.

Everything from vintage furniture finds at Grandview Mercantile to Collier West for adorable gifts. The two places I think the editors at Lucky missed were the obvious Jeni’s Ice Cream (for superb ice cream) and On Paper for amazing greeting cards.

Check out the other stores they featured and when you get a chance, pile a few pals in the car for a road trip south!

Can’t get there soon enough? One of the stores featured was Cleveland’s-own, Flower Child. Headquartered on Clifton Blvd in Cleveland, Flower Child is a mecca for vintage clothing, accessories and home goods.

Anyone want to road trip? :)

  Holiday Saturday.

There is lots to do this weekend in Cleveland.

With only 23 days until Christmas some of us may be pulling out the holiday decorations this weekend, making a gift shopping list, if you are ahead of the curve perhaps you are starting to wrap and bow each gift with care and delight. Myself I need to make a list, check it twice and get wrapping!

If you don’t have a special something from your sweetie, stop by the holiday hot toddy party at the Banyan Tree on Saturday afternoon. I went last year and it was such a wonderful little party complete with cocktails and chocolate dipped strawberries. I bought a handful of unique gifts for my family and some awesome holiday cards as well.

If you are into getting bundled up, put on your matching scarf, mitten and hat set and head out to Ohio City for their Annual Holiday Home Tour. Showcasing the homes on Whitman Avenue, this tour is sure to sell out. I love to see the various, over the top decorations. The residents really put their best feet forward and open their homes to share in the holiday spirit.

The annual Art & Craft Building artist studio sale is also this weekend. I especially LOVE this sale. It’s such a wonderful way to explore the individual creative spaces. I will definitely carve out time for this show. Although I haven’t really purchased much from it, as someone who appreciates great talent, this show is an inspiration!

Don’t forget free yoga at Inner Bliss Yoga all day on Saturday!

Looking to head west? The shops of downtown river are hosting their annual holiday walk from 11-4pm. Merchants including Paper Trails, Mitchell Sotka Antiques, and the Girl Next Door, will offer discounts, prizes, face painting, pet photos with Santa and more!

Then there is a Browns game on Sunday. Find yourself a cozy couch and get writing those holiday cards with McCoy and his crew.

Whatever your weekend plans are…get out and enjoy the chilly Northern Ohio Weather. Any excuse to bundle up is great with me! :)

  OooooH Baby

Hi Cleveland, happy Monday.

So I have these friends who used to live here but moved to California. They are expecting their second baby this week and I wanted to send them a little midwest love from the Land of the Cleve. I turned to Etsy, my go-to gift source for a baby gift of sorts and I just had to share.

I found this one store called LilBurritos, check out these two adorable onesies. I just LOVE LOVE them!!!

I ended up turning to my good friend Small Screen Designs for the perfect Terminal Tower onesie as the final gift selection.

Needless to say, they loved the gift and the baby will wear it proudly…this Wednesday! Congrats you two.

Here are just a few to celebrate, all different but all great at what they do. Take a peak, plan your purchases and shop, shop, shop!

  wear a dress… Lizzy & Jane

Last weekend I spent a relaxing day strolling though Chagrin Falls with one of my closest gal pals. As we meandered through the tiny shops we stumbled upon this amazing dress shop named “Lizzy & Jane.

Every wall displays darling unique dresses…I wanted one of each. Did you know there is a dress for every occasion? There is. These hand crafted, works of art can be worn with cowboy boots right up to your best pair of stilettos. When I was in the store I had the pleasure to meet one of the owners, Marilyn. She told me how they work with their designer to choose very select fabrics and craft them into the perfect dress for you.

Not only do they carry unique dresses they also carry the real simple line of bridesmaids dresses which are stunning! The store also carries pretty jewels and bags to accessorize your dress. Seriously I was like a kid in a candy store, I wanted to buy one so bad and now I can’t stop thinking about them…..so maybe this weekend…

It truly is a gorgeous store, you simply must visit!
