Happy Friday CLE! Hope everyone has lots of fun plans on the horizon for another chilly weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I heart  winter (if I didn’t we would have a problem) however with spring fashions, vacation wishes and a few home projects on the horizon I am starting to crave the feeling of spring. Bring it on spring!

With that said how many of you have ever wanted to make a terrarium? I tell you what, just the little bit of green brings a lot of life to a dining room or end table. The green living plants evoke growth and spring to me. To learn more about making your own terrarium, swing by any of our area greenhouses such as Petitti’s or Gale’s in Westlake for some tips and tricks…don’t forget the rocks and charcoal for good drainage and root growth.

Yesterday I stopped into Home Depot for some teeny tiny brass nuts (crafternoon project to come!) and was immediately welcomed by their just-in shipment of assorted succulents. Perfect to turn every wintery terrarium into springtime bliss. If you have time at lunch or on your way home swing by Home Depot on 117th to get yours while the getting is good. Rutabaga Nights – Lakewood Earth and Food’s First Annual Fundraising Gala

Support local food and celebrate the growing season at the first Rutabaga Nights, Lakewood Earth & Food’s First Annual Fundraising Gala! Live music, local food and beer throughout the evening. Tons of great art, gift certificates and tickets will be available through a silent auction. Proceeds will benefit LEAF and City Fresh.

Bands Performing at Rutabaga Nights include Outside Jakes (Folk), Mobius (Jazz Quintet), Good Things (World Music), Green Escalators (Indie) and Hobo Monk (Eclectic). Katherine and Jen from WRUW’s Maximum Consumption will be spinning food related party music all night between bands.

Yummy food will be graciously provided by 56 West, Bon Appetit Management Company, Buckeye Beer Engine, Dewey’s Pizza, Gypsy Beans, India Garden, Italian Creations, Karen Bosworth Confections, Lakewood Phoenix Café, La Pita Express, Lolita and Melt.

In addition to the live music and great food, there will also be an interactive video sandbox and playstation with real sand and dirt, sounds fun!

The event is being held at the historic Lake Erie Screw Factory (Bird Town area of Lakewood at 13000 Athens Ave) Tickets are $25 per person, $15 for students. Tickets are available at Green Smart Gifts 14534 Detroit Ave, Gypsy Beans 6425 Detroit Ave, and Lakewood Phoenix Café 15108 Detroit Ave.

  Warm thoughts & the greenhouse

Cleveland it’s cold! But come on…we are in Ohio, wait five minutes and the weather will shift. See, we have this large body of water which greatly effects how the temps will swing, one day it’s 18 and the next it’s 50. Where else can you experience such “flexible” weather patterns?

I have heard a ton of complaints and even “prayers to the gods” to make spring come faster this year. For those cold babies, I have a few ideas I will try and share throughout the next few winter weeks.

Thought #1

While most of us are aware of the grandiose beauty that lies within the glasshouse at the Cleveland Botanical Gardens (www.cbgarden.org), have you ever visited the Rockefeller Park Greenhouse (aka : City of Cleveland Greenhouse)? Built in 1912 and located just off 90 on MLK, this greenhouse not only grows all of the plants used in the city landscaping it also is a place of wonderment, discovery and “vacation.”

Don’t have the cash to escape the cold and get to the tropics? The greenhouse has a vast collection of orchids and citrus trees. Wish you could fly to the desert for a blast of the hot (but wicked dry) air? The garden has a room filled with cacti and succulents. This weekend pack your lunch, grab your notepad and colored pencils and head over to the garden for a few hours of warmth in the greenhouse. Note* unlike the larger botanical garden (although I LOVE this museum too), this greenhouse museum is free (thanks to our tax dollars at work!) and open daily from 10-4.

  Pollan Speaks on Food (10/28)

Even though this event is scheduled for next week, I couldn’t resist posting early, I think it will be an evening of insight and inspiration.

For the past 20 years, Michael Pollan has been writing books and articles about the places where the human and natural worlds intersect: food, agriculture, gardens, drugs, and architecture. Pollan is the author of, most recently, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. His previous book, The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals, was named one of the 10 best books of 2006 by the New York Times and the Washington Post.

A contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine since 1987, his writing has received numerous awards, including the James Beard Award for best magazine series in 2003. He often lectures widely on food, agriculture, and gardening.

  Pumpkin Fest!

Haven’t got your pumpkin yet, pumpkin? This weekend make your way out to Red Wagon Farm in Columbia Station for some fall fun. Choose your Jack-o’-lantern-to-be and buy some freshly picked apples at the annual Pumpkin Festival.

Kids can tackle “Straw Mountain” and meet with the scarecrows while Mom & Dad can roam through the corn maze and enjoy a roll in the hay..I mean a hayride! :)

Throughout this summer, the folks over at University Circle Inc. have planned, presented and perfected “Wade Oval Wednesday’s.” With only a few more Wednesday’s left in the series don’t miss out.

All of the museum are open late with special reduced missions, Check out Gourmets in the Garden at the Botanical Garden where area chefs present some menus ideas and yummy samples. Listen to Cats on Holiday a “swamp pop” band, performing rain or shine! Ride your bike to the circle and take advantage of the free bike corral, secure bike parking provide by Ohio Bike Co-op.

“Zensai” means “entry garden.” In this spirit of welcoming, we invite you to bask in the sophistication and pristine beauty of Japanese horticulture when Cleveland Botanical Garden presents Zensai: The Horticulture of Japan through June 29.

In no way is Japan’s rich heritage more evident than its horticulture, and no time is better than spring to admire the Japanese horticultural tradition in all its splendor. Among the beautiful and serene expressions of Japanese horticulture on display will be the Garden’s own permanent Japanese Garden, a Cleveland treasure since 1975 (as old as I am!).

This week, visit the gardens as the Marchetti Company will offer tastings of sake and plum wine from Japan and California along with an assortment of Sushi to choose from.
