  Giveaway : Tri-C JazzFest

Good morning CLE & happy TAX Day! Hope everyone got by without owing too much to “the man” this year. Perhaps you’ve even received a refund…time to shop! :)

Did you know that this week kicks off the JazzFest? Last year I had the pleasure of attending the Tri-C JazzFest for the very first time. I saw the very talented, stunning and engaging artist Diana Krall at one of the many concerts during the week of live music presented by the JazzFest.

Now is your turn to win a pair of tickets and experience for yourself just how great this annual event really is.

Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland features jazz performances, classes, lectures, and many other concert and community outreach activities. Local and national artists teach, compose, arrange, and perform. Concerts take place at PlayhouseSquare, the Metropolitan Campus of Cuyahoga Community College, and the new MOCA Cleveland. This year, the show is running from April 19 thru May 4.

In addition to the show, there is an Opening Night Party on April 19 to kick off the festival! The party will be held at Playhouse Square in the State Theatre Lobby from 5-7pm and is sponsored by Great Lakes Brewing Company. The event is free and open to the public, and will feature live music by Detroit’s Nadir & Distorted Soul. After the party, the fest will kick off with performances by Aaron Neville and Dr. John at 8pm!

So you want in? Want that free pair of tickets? Visit the festival site to explore the performers, then tweet me @iheartclev  which artist you would like to see at this years  #TriCJazzFest. Winner to be chosen by  Wednesday, April 17th! Good luck.

  New Cleveland Christmas Anthem!

Check out this soon-to-be-your-new-favorite Christmas anthem, called Northcoast Christmas from The Modern Electric.

The Modern Electric is a cinematic pop band from Cleveland, Oh that combine soul, melody and emotion to soundtrack those moments in life that are just like the movies. Christmas Story anyone?

The track is a celebratory anthem that captures the joys, struggles and triumphs of a Christmas on the Northwest. My favorite line is “Shopping at a thrift store in December, this’ll be a Christmas to remember.” I feel like it speaks to me. HA!

Listen to the tune, download it for FREE, tell your friends about it, like them on facebook, get to know The Modern Electric. Thanks for the treat you guys, happy holidays!

day 2 : Put the Needle on the Record book

Good evening my dear friends. Where did today go? In my other day job, I work for a graphic design firm and we have been hustling and bustling in prep for this weekend’s big Bazaar Bizarre. I apologize for the late post, but here we go!

So THANK YOU to all who came out to Dredgers Union last night for the first ANNUAL (we are gonna do it again next year!) Shopping Shindig. It was great to meet a few of you for the first time and also see some of my favorite CLE friends. Thanks to Sweet Moses for the awesome chocolate tasting tray and the amazing sea salt caramel popcorn (remember to check out their holiday gift tins, makes a yummy gift!) and to Crav Vodka, the cocktail was the perfect shopping companion.

Just a few pictures of last night before we get going with “day 2!”

(a “Cravberry” cocktail kept the shopping juices flowing)

(some happy shoppers celebrate the holiday shopping season in style!)

(Sweet Moses makes amazing gift tins filled with all sorts of delicious treats, stop in today and cross off that shopping list!)

(Allison won the one 50% off coupon, congrats to you!)

So all and all it was a lot of fun. Plus, I too walked away with a few gifts and a little navy skirt with iphone-sized pockets just perfect for moi. :) Enough about me…onto the giveaway.

Today our gift for you comes from a good friend, of a friend, Mr. Matthew Chojnacki author of “Put the Needle on the Record.” This book compares more than 250 vinyl single covers that represent nearly every prominent 80′s musician; and who doesn’t love a good Madonna album cover?

Seriously, this book is the first of its’ kind, Matt spent hundreds of hours interviewing the musicians about the process, the artists, the decisions and many other unheard pieces of music history to write this masterpiece. I am proud too call him one of Northeast Ohio’s experts on 80′s music for sure!
Check out this stop action video for promotion of the book, makes me want to dance in my multiple sets of legwarmers. :)

Want a copy of this new release? To win this new book in time for the holidays, like Matt’s book on facebook and then comment on this post, tweet me about the post (@iheartcleev) or both! (2 entries per person). The winner will be notified by the end of day Monday, December 12th. Good luck!

In the meantime, if you must get your hands on a copy, I believe Matt will be selling “put the needle on the record” this weekend at Bazaar Bizarre. Stop by and meet this music mastermind! Thanks Matt.

Music Monday : ticket giveaways (2 shows!)

Happy Trick or Treat Cleveland! Hope you were able to get your spooky  party on this past weekend. I attended a rockin Halloween Party at Redstone and it was full on crazy cool. So many amazing costumes, so much effort and yes, in true adult Halloween fashion, lots of sexy zombies, school girls and cheerleaders. I had no idea that Redstone even had an upstairs area capable of such a dance party, very cool space.

Anyhow, if you missed this past weekends Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings sold out show at the Beachland, I have two upcoming shows you don’t want to miss, PLUS I have TWO free pairs of tickets to giveaway! (one pair to each show)

This week kicks off a series of events for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s, 2011 American Music Masters series honoring the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin.

There is actually an entire weeks worth of workshops, lectures and smaller concerts (some FREE!) cumulating with a day of learning at the annual conference and a star studded tribute concert on Saturday night, November 5th. For information on any of these events make sure to go visit the special Rock Hall site dedicated to this week of celebration!

The second music happening to tell you about, while not quite as big as Ms. Aretha is AM & Shawn Lee. Making their Cleveland debut Tuesday, November 8th at the Beachland Tavern this LA indie pop group will “whoo” you with tunes. Their sound is very 60′s groove, Rolling Stone calls them “hypnotic” and if you are like me and love Thievery Corporation, AM & Shawn Lee have been touring with them so you know they are good! Seattle Weekly even called them one of the “BEST Live Shows of the Year,” and we all know how many good shows past through that rainy city. (Also, visit their site for a FREE mp3 download of their first single, “Dark into Light”)

To win a pair of tickets to either the Saturdays Aretha Tribute concert at the State Theatre or the November 8th,  AM & Shawn Lee show at the Beachland Tavern, either leave a comment below including which show you are interested in & your email (need to contact the winner) OR follow me and tweet the following about the contest “I want to win tickets to (Aretha or AM Shawn Lee) @iheartclev”

Winners will be notified by Friday, November 4th around lunchtime! Happy Music Monday yall. :)

  Brooke Fraser @ Beachland, giveaway!

It is another one of those days…chilly, damp and the perfect singer-songwriter music type of day.

Today I am swaying to the tunes of the lovely Miss Brooke Fraser. A native of New Zealand, Brooke will be visiting the Beachland (in the ballroom) next Monday night, May 9th to promote her new album “Flags.”

I think her sound is a blend of Sheryl Crow, Colbie Caillat with a twist of the unique sounds of  feist.

To listen to some of her songs, like her on Facebook, nice music to get you though today.

I have a pair of tickets to see this show, so drop me a note and let me know if you would like to spend your Monday night with the musical songstress, very talented and beautiful Brooke Fraser (tickets will be give away by Friday at noon). Hope to see you there!

Gotta Groove Records & Record Store Day

So, last year I was craving the tunes of my childhood past, the sound of the needle as it hit the vinyl, the small nuances of melody and harmony as the blended together on the turntable…I wanted a record player!

After some vintage store scouring and lots of online shops I settled on a small portable number that calls my dining room bar cart home. The sounds of vintage and new vinyl music can warm up any dinner conversation.

Well, knowing that this Saturday is National Record Store Day, I set out to see what was going on in Cleveland for the celebration. Not only did I find a wonderful list of all the record stores in Cleveland, I also stumbled upon an actual vinyl record manufacturer, right here in Cleveland! With that, I called Vince at Gotta Groove Records about coming in for a tour.

A lawyer by trade, Vince founded this business out of passion for vinyl records. His love of music and his knowledge that vinyl was “making a comeback” made the transition from attorney to small business owner a fun challenge.

“All of our equipment was sourced from another manufacturer that was closing in New Jersey” explained Vince. After bringing the retro album-making equipment the Gotta Groove team brought in a master record maker to teach them things like how to physically run the presses, tweak the sound, check for imperfections in the records and other small nuances important to the trade.

Q : How many grooves are there on a vinyl record?
A : 1 groove on each side, so 2! (most people think each song is a groove, not so.)

Q : How is the sticker applied to the center of the vinyl album?
A : It is actually heat pressed into the vinyl record during production (most people think it is a sticker that is applied at the end of the process)

Q : “What is the most bizarre record manufacturing request you’ve ever encountered?”
A : “We once were asked to place ashes into a special edition album, come to find out it they were ashes from a German Bible from the 1800′s, overall those records didn’t sound the best”

Thanks to Vince and the rest of the team at Gotta Groove for showing us around the plant and for all the great record facts and stories. If you are ever in the mood for a tour, Vince is a stellar tour guide and welcomes interest in his music making manufacturing passion.

So this weekend, get out your record players and celebrate National Record Store Day…Go Vinyl!

Happy sunny Monday Cleveland. I don’t know about you, but when it’s sunny on a Monday I find myself smiling and excited to tackle the week. It also makes for getting out of bed MUCH easier.

There will be refreshments available for purchase and a drawing for two FREE tickets to next years Induction Ceremony. Sounds like a great night to be hanging out at the Rock Hall.
