  Guide to OPENING DAY!

This lovely post comes to us from a seasoned Opening Day, Tribe Fan. While I myself do enjoy a soft pretzel, a chilled beer and the roar of the crowd, I must admit I’m no expert. This post is completely awesome and covers all aspects of Friday’s first day of baseball season. It’s a great read and TOTALLY worth sharing with all of your tribe-loving pals. ENJOY and GO TRIBE!

“If you’re like me you probably have this day marked in your calendar for a long time now. Even though the weather is miserable out there, the start of the baseball season signifies that summer is finally right around the corner. Who’s excited to hear the crack of the bat? To mow down a kosher hot dog? To hear a crowd of 40,000 people roar?  Yeah, we all are!

Please allow me to be your guide for this year’s Cleveland Indians’ home opener. By no means am I an expert on the matter but I have been going for many, many years. So hopefully some of you may find this information useful on our big day!

Here are some facts about our home opener:
- Game is on Friday, 4/1 at 3:05 pm vs. the Chicago White Sox
- The gates will open at 1 pm so visitors can participate in all the opening festivities, most notably honoring former Cleveland Indians pitcher, Bob Feller, who died in late 2010.
- In fact, some of the uniform changes include the number 19 patch to be worn on every sleeve in honor of “Rapid Robert”.
- Starting pitchers are Fausto Carmona vs. Mark Buehrle
- New food this year in the ballpark includes: Caribbean pork wings, a chicken and waffle sandwich, a beer-battered cod sandwich and half pound bratwurst and Italian sausage sandwiches!
- A new popular hangout will sure to be “Your Dad’s Beer Stand” which features old-school favorites like Blatz, Little Kings, Pabst, Genesee and Rolling Rock.

Not familiar with what’s been going on with our Indians as of late? Here are a couple of tidbits that you can share with your friends:
- This is the 18th year of Progressive Field (Jacobs Field). Crazy huh? Yup, opened in 1994.
- The Indians will have the youngest 40-man roster in the big leagues.  We should be spritely!
- Coming back from major knee surgery, Grady Sizemore probably won’t play his first actual game until late April.
- A major sore spot last year, the Indians’ new projected starting infield – Matt LaPorta (1B), Orlando Cabrera (2B), Asdrubal Cabrera (SS) and Jack Hannahan (3B) – has made only one error all spring!
- Shin-Soo Choo has had a strong spring, and he’s coming off an All-Star caliber season (.300, 22 HRs, 90 RBI). He has hit exactly .300 each of the past two seasons, his OPS being an all-star caliber .884 since 2009.
- Carlos Santana will see time at first base and DH. The Indians say they want Santana to play “about 145 games,” but not catching that many. He is their cleanup hitter, and he did have off-season knee surgery.
- What about Pronk, you ask? Travis Hafner is the No. 5 hitter. We are all very aware of his shoulder problems and his ridiculous decline in power. In fact, he hasn’t hit more than 16 homers or driven in more than 50 runs in a season since 2007. But it’s a new year right? Another summer in the leagues. Anything can happen.

Last but not least, here are a few pointers that should help your opening day be a little more enjoyable
- Dress appropriately!  It’s going to be very cold and most likely rainy.  Just accept this to be the fact now and prepare for it.
- Remember that “there’s no crying in baseball!” Remind that to your friends as well.  No one wants to hear how cold and crappy it is outside all day.
- The game is sold out already. However there won’t be any shortages of “business men” selling tickets outside the park. Be cognizant of actual ticket prices and allow for the Opening Day surcharge.
- Transportation to the ballpark – I like the combo meal. Take the RAPID down to the park and use a taxi cab to get home. The train is so much fun going there because mobs of people are psyched up for the big day. But then the cab is critical to take coming home in order to avoid the same mobs of people who have had their personalities changed by the box score, intoxication and weather. You know what I mean.
- When to get downtown? The game is at 3:05 pm and I like to be down there a couple hours early to soak in the atmosphere. All around the Gateway District will be hopping with fun. Eat a sandwich at Panini’s. Check out the new custom t-shirts for sale on the
street corners. Do some people watching on E. 4.th It’s the one game out of the season that we always sell out.  Take advantage of the positive vibes.

Ok, so grab your peanuts and Cracker Jack. Put on your wool Tribe baseball cap with the ear flaps down. Bring your lucky pencil to keep track of the box score. And most of all have a safe and fun Opening Day!  See you there!”

(thanks SO MUCH for this wonderful post “Opening Day Fan!”)

  Go Cavs! (01/09)

Hello and Happy Friday!

So one of the reasons “I heart cleveland” is all the pro-sports that roll through our Northeast Ohio calender year. Baseball, Football and Basketball, we are a lucky city to have the ability to support this many professional athletes around town.

This morning I wanted write something sassy about tonights Cavs vs. Celtic game (8pm). Lebron, the uniforms, the home advantage, the dance team and how we are gonna pound the celtics…but I found this tantalizing article from “The Optimist” (www.nba.com/cavaliers/features/optimist_celtics_090109.html) and thought he summed it up best! A great read for an even better game tonight!

“Que pasa, proud citizen-soldiers of the Wine and Gold! I am the Optimist, and there are Celtics in town. So Let’s Get It On.
That’s right, the World Champion Boston Celtics are amongst us at this very moment – skulking around Tower City eating our hot pretzels and driving guests at the Ritz-Carlton insane by blasting their Irish folk music at all hours.

That’s how these Celtics roll. They’re Champions with an attitude. Don’t like it? Pound salt.

That’s fine by me. The Cavaliers and Celtics have always had, at best, an acrimonious relationship. And you readers know how I personally feel – and have always felt – about our Gaelic nemesii. For some people, it’s Michigan. For others, it’s the Pittsburgh Steelers or New York Yankees. For me, it’s the Celtics.

Whether it was their derailment of the Miracle squad in ’76 or Larry Bird and Co. snuffing World B. Free’s Comeback Cavs in ’85, the Boston Celtics have brought the Wine, Gold and I nothing but heartache. And I’ve witnessed much of this ugliness first-hand – from seminal events like last season’s seven-game slugfest in the Eastern Conference Semis, to traumatizing incidents like watching the flight of Paul Pierce’s lung-butter the night he chugged one in the direction of little Luke Jackson at an exhibition game in Columbus.

But that stuff’s all ancient history when these two teams get down tonight at The Q. Right now, the Celtics and Cavaliers are the Eastern Conference’s heavyweight division. So prepare ye for a Friday Night Fight on the corner of Huron and Ontario.

Two weeks ago, the Mighty Mighty Bostonians looked like they might not lose again all season. But then the Lakers dropped them on Christmas Day and they ain’t been right since – dropping six of their last eight. Doc Rivers’ club needs to get themselves back together. And they’re thinking that a nationally-televised win over the top dog in the East would do the trick.

That’s just the kind of East Coast bias that cheeses we Midwesterners off. Get off the schneid somewhere else, Celtics! You can huff and puff, but you can’t blow this house down. And we both know: If P.J. Brown doesn’t put back a pair of errant air-balls, the Wine and Gold wins Game 7 in Boston.

Yeah, when the Celtics roll into town, it gets everyone’s medulla oblongata throbbing. Even our little mop-topped friend from Gamecock Country has his panties in a bunch over Boston.”

GO CAVS!!!!

  Amuse me.

I have to confess, I recently purchased an ‘Everyday with Rachel Ray Magazine,’ for work reference only. I am not a big Ray fan in general but this issue was filled many Cleveland references that I couldn’t resist sharing.

The big story, America’s Greatest Amusement Parks, Bigger! Faster! Taller! features the one and only Cedar Point. For a low (?) cost of $43 a ticket ($16 for children) you can visit this 138-year-old Ohio summertime institution. Get there early and plan to stay late (park closes at 10:00 pm) as there are so many roller coaters at this park, and you can’t ride just once.

Some of my favorites (and Rachel’s) are the Raptor (I love to let my legs hang free and flip over almost 6 times) and Millennium Force (what could be better than flying at 93 mph?). I haven’t had the opportunity to ride Maverick yet but I can’t wait to check it out. A day at Cedar Point isn’t complete without a visit to Frontier Trail to watch the artisans blow glass and bend steel, true craftsman.

Picking up the pub at the checkout aisle at least got me re-excited to visit our “neighborhood” amusement park. Still not a big fan of the “fire pistol,” but at least we see eye-to-eye one one thing…the Top Thrill Dragster is a killer way to kick off your day at the park. We should go sometime! :)

  Fair time. (8/05-10)

Can you believe it’s August? I can’t. I still have lots of things I need to “get in” to call it an official summer. A game of put put golf at Memphis Kiddie Park. A few more trips out on the Kayaks. Ice cream at Honey Hut and perhaps even an evening of firefly collecting (just kidding…sorta). But most of all summer in Cleveland wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the fair!

The Cuyahoga County Fair runs now until Sunday at the Berea Fairgrounds. Pack your Purell and go to oogle the baby pigs and cows, the best tasting blueberry pies, the gorgeous gladiolas grown-locally and more. General admission is $5.95 (children 3-12 yrs old $4.95) or after 9:30 pm, $3.00. If you want to take a spin on the Ferris wheel or bumper cars (my favorite) ride tickets are $.50 each (2 tickets per ride) or purchase an all-day ride band for just $12.

What could be more summer than a evening at the fair? Cotton Candy (love the sweet smell and baby pink hue) and corn on the cob. Live music and motor sports. Activities for you (flea market) the kids (bubble gum blowing contest) and your strange “uncle Eric” (the great bear show). Add it to this weekend’s list.

  Carmona returns (7/26)

Saturday, July 26th 2008

Carmona cleared to return Saturday, right-hander hasn’t pitched for Tribe since May 23! When the 40-pitch ‘pen was over Tuesday at Angel Stadium, Fausto Carmona, nine weeks after landing on the disabled list with a left hip strain, got his official clearance to rejoin the Indians’ rotation Saturday against the Twins. Manager Eric Wedge wouldn’t speculate on what the corresponding roster move will be Saturday. “We’re playing it day by day in regard to that,” Wedge said. “We don’t have to do anything until Saturday.”

What could be better than a baseball game this weekend? There are so many things happening this weekend in Cleveland but with a close friend in from out of town, nothing is better than a Sunday afternoon ball game, a cold beer and the ultimate “I” soft pretzel (and lots of sunscreen!)?

The Tribe will be in town all weekend (Friday, Saturday & an afternoon game Sunday). For game times and ticket information visit www.cleveland.indians.mlb.com
