Music Monday : ticket giveaways (2 shows!)

Happy Trick or Treat Cleveland! Hope you were able to get your spooky  party on this past weekend. I attended a rockin Halloween Party at Redstone and it was full on crazy cool. So many amazing costumes, so much effort and yes, in true adult Halloween fashion, lots of sexy zombies, school girls and cheerleaders. I had no idea that Redstone even had an upstairs area capable of such a dance party, very cool space.

Anyhow, if you missed this past weekends Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings sold out show at the Beachland, I have two upcoming shows you don’t want to miss, PLUS I have TWO free pairs of tickets to giveaway! (one pair to each show)

This week kicks off a series of events for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum’s, 2011 American Music Masters series honoring the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin.

There is actually an entire weeks worth of workshops, lectures and smaller concerts (some FREE!) cumulating with a day of learning at the annual conference and a star studded tribute concert on Saturday night, November 5th. For information on any of these events make sure to go visit the special Rock Hall site dedicated to this week of celebration!

The second music happening to tell you about, while not quite as big as Ms. Aretha is AM & Shawn Lee. Making their Cleveland debut Tuesday, November 8th at the Beachland Tavern this LA indie pop group will “whoo” you with tunes. Their sound is very 60′s groove, Rolling Stone calls them “hypnotic” and if you are like me and love Thievery Corporation, AM & Shawn Lee have been touring with them so you know they are good! Seattle Weekly even called them one of the “BEST Live Shows of the Year,” and we all know how many good shows past through that rainy city. (Also, visit their site for a FREE mp3 download of their first single, “Dark into Light”)

To win a pair of tickets to either the Saturdays Aretha Tribute concert at the State Theatre or the November 8th,  AM & Shawn Lee show at the Beachland Tavern, either leave a comment below including which show you are interested in & your email (need to contact the winner) OR follow me and tweet the following about the contest “I want to win tickets to (Aretha or AM Shawn Lee) @iheartclev”

Winners will be notified by Friday, November 4th around lunchtime! Happy Music Monday yall. :)

  Full GREEN ahead.

Hello & happy week of the green, the Irish, the Guinness, the leprechaun and most of all, the week of corned beef and cabbage.

Isn’t St Patricks Day grand? Besides Tribe Opening Day, March 17th truly signifies the coming of spring to many Clevelanders.

Spring and perhaps, skipping school (work), a green tongue due to the ghastly food coloring poured into your pitcher, a crowded RTA ride down to public square and lots of screaming fans of every Northeast Ohio Irish American bagpipe player….men in skirts, swoon!

I just thought I’d share a few of my favorite to-do’s on St Patty’s Day, in case you haven’t already firmed up plans.

Start off your morning with some super yummy raisin soda bread. Blackbird Bakery and Breadsmith make tasty bread and while I am not 100%, I would bet On The Rise and Stone Oven will also mix up a batch or two. This dense bakery is the perfect way to soak up your morning cocktails.

After filling your tummy with a hearty breakfast, hop on the Rapid and head downtown to the annual Cleveland parade. WARNING, this parade is not for the faint of hearts the overwhelming display of public intoxication and green clothing accessories (boas, beads, knee socks, tattoos, crowns, etc.) make people watching half the fun.It is usually pretty “PG” but often turns “R” as the day goes on. (something to consider for all you parents with little ones)

If you need a break while you are downtown there are lots of fun events happening on East 4th. Many of the restaurants are offering lunch specials as well as opening their patios for the reported 60 degree weather. I’m sure it will be super packed, but again, embrace the crowd and celebrate with your fellow Irishmen.

By now you may have had a few libations and are looking for what’s next. Music, music and more music! Live performers will be all over the city that day, and this is the time I get myself out of downtown and find a local pub to “recover” in. The bagpipe and Celtic tunes sound better when accompanied by a stiff Irish coffee.

If you need a sugar injection between the afternoon and the evening hours, the traditional McDonalds Shamrock Shake is a MUST. however, for those of us purists, make sure to request no whip and no cherry. How can they mess with a sure thing?

To close the day wrap up the evening strong at The Harp with the Boys from County Hell. They know how to draw a crowd, to get you up and dancing and to keep everyone going strong. Add a shot or two of Jameson in the mix and you’ll get your third wind for the day.

So with that, enjoy your St. Patrick’s Cleveland. Be safe.

I saw the first episode last night and I have to say, I thought it was pretty funny. This morning Matt Lauer and Valerie Bertinelli were on the Today Show talking about tonight’s premier and I couldn’t help but give it two thumbs up!

  Burton Antiques (06/12)

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

Do you like to be outdoors? Are you the guy still holding on to your childhood Star Wars characters? Girls, are you following the trend of vintage pins, purses an scarves?
This Saturday, for one day only stroll through the Geauga County fairgrounds for the annual Burton Antique Celebration. Vendors from all over come to sell their vintage finds, it’s like a museum of history outside.
Burton is about an hour east of Cleveland but the show is completely worth the drive. So pack your hand sanitizer, a big bottle water and plan to pick up an elephant ear or two (carnival food will be served) and enjoy the day, or a few hours at the show.

  Browns Rule!

November 19th through December 13th, 2009

Cleveland Public Theatre is proud to present Browns Rules by Eric Schmiedl Directed by Bill Hoffman Original songs written and composed by Hoffman and Schmiedl

Don’t miss the world-premiere of this cabaret style musical by nationally recognized local playwright Eric Schmiedl. Browns Rules is both a send-up and a love-letter to The Cleveland Browns. Three performer musicians and the audience are on a mission – successfully name the 29 rules of being a Cleveland Browns Fan and the Browns will win the Superbowl in 2010.

Part vaudeville, part sideshow, part variety show Browns Rules is an interactive exploration of the relationship between Cleveland and our beloved football team. With a rock band on stage, three performers combine storytelling and drama as they rip apart myths, celebrate heroes, and try to understand what makes the Cleveland Browns so important to our culture. What was the All-America Football Conference and who destroyed it? How did Paul Brown inspire his famous 1949 all-star team? Art Modell, friend or foe? Who called “Red Right 88?” Who wrote the song “Bernie, Bernie?” Cleveland Browns Stadium, asset or financial disaster? These questions and more are examined as Browns Rules looks at our dear Brownies and the city that loves and hates them.

Showtimes: Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:00pm
Monday, November 30 at 7:00pm (Tickets only $10!)
Sunday, December 13 at 3:00pm (Browns have a bye week!)

  216 Holiday Shoppe (11/06)

Friday, November 6th, 2009

This Friday the cute little Cleveland-born “sister” of Room Service will open, don’t miss out. The new store, expected to be open the entire month of November, (maybe longer if we are lucky?) is called The “216 Holiday Shoppe.”

Located next door to the new Capitol Theatre (at 1390 W. 65th St.) the Holiday Shoppe will be open most days 5 to 9pm (Saturday 11-9pm and Sunday 12-7pm) and Fridays complete with performance from local musicians. With over 50 designers you are sure to find your holiday gifts for every loved one.

Yesterday I had the privilege of lending a hand to my friend Danielle (owner of Room Service, creative thinker & all around sassy lady) in anticipation of the opening excitement. Although I can’t reveal the cool art and interesting visual space design, if you squint your eyes a bit, you may be able to make out these blurred images of cool products (home goods, art. tee shirts (lots of tee shirts!), jewelry, accessories, and more, I can’t list everything).

Looking forward to seeing everyone Friday night at the opening of The “216 Holiday Shoppe.” For more details and information visit the blog at Room Service Home.

  Hot Cha Cha (8/30)

Sunday, August 30th, 2009

HotChaCha started as a girl band on an early Friday morning in ’07 at the West Side Market in Cleveland.

Mandy and Jovana were sipping on coffee and decided that due to Mandys’ brilliant guitar sound, and Jovanas’ outrageous stage presence, they had something HUGE going on. A few days later a local drummer, Lisa, was txt messaged to come and jam with the above mentioned broads.

For three months the girls consumed large amounts of beer, peed in the garbage can at the practice space, wrote music, and jammed. Finally, one night under the influence of large amounts of alcohol, they agreed to play their first show.

After they rocked, offended a bunch of people, and inspired everyone to cry, they realized how HUGE they could be. Another thing became apparent- they needed a bass player!

Local bass playing boys were all in their business trying to get in on the HotChaCha phenomena, but the girls were firm- they wanted a girl bass player. That night Heather saw the show and fell in love with the band. The next practice she joined HotChaCha and never left.

It is than, that HCC was truly created. Mandy, Lisa. Heather, and Jovi became one ultimate machine that will make you laugh, and cry all at once.

See the Hot Cha Chas THIS Sunday at the Grog Shop tickets are $6
