  Last minute sweetie gifts!

Have you got your special someone a little something for tomorrow’s holiday? I just heard a radio commercial for getting your sweetie a gift at your neighborhood CVS…I almost died inside. I mean, not that I am above a huge box of Dove chocolates, a cheap bottle of red wine, an InStyle or Us Weekly Magazine, some new black liquid eyeliner, an itunes gift card or a few new lipsmackers…However, why would ANYONE shop at CVS for a gift when Cleveland has a plethora of talented creatives, hot spots & activities to support?

Looking for last minute…gifts that you can call an order in for or pick up tonight? Check out a few of my suggestions…

Flowers : Don’t call 1.800.Flowers, but instead support your local florist. Shops like V2V (Lakewood) and Urban Orchid (Cleveland) are two very stylish floral design shops. Give them a call for something unique for your sweetie. Also, there is also Heinen’s (also a local family owned  business) flower department which usually has fun little bouquets and plants, at a much more affordable cost than turning to the web.

Chocolate : This morning I saw a small plane in the air pulling a “CHOC” flag; I knew it was Malley’s right away. There is nothing like a Malley’s Chocolate covered pretzel and we all know they have chocolate covered strawberries for special occasions! besides Malley’s there is also the fine art of chocolate made by Lilly’s Handmade Chocolates (Tremont), a few of these make an impressive gift. Or, you could cure the chocolate craving with a red velvet cupcake from Cookie and A Cupcake or the recent America’s Best Chocolate Chip Cookie (by Food & Wine Magazine) at Blackbird Bakery (Lakewood.) Seriously, so many wonderful options.

Jewelry : If you’ve ever been to any of the holiday indie craft shows you know there are so many wonderful jewelers in the area. But just as a reminder….guys…my friend Erica of On the Lookout Jewelry makes such detailed beaded pieces, your Valentine would love a necklace by her! Or “she” also loves Oceanne creations (especially the cupid earrings) (wink wink) Both of these jewelers sell to many of our little area boutiques so check out their websites or drop them an email to find out where you can score a last minute gift.

Food & Drinks : There are so many local places, I can’t even begin to list them all. However, I will say one option  I think is really cool is from Gatherings Kitchen located in Lakewood. Where you reserve your dinner, swing by on the way home and pick it up, reheat and voila a 4-course romantic dinner (including short ribs!) at home with NO clean up! $50 for the dinner feeds two lovebirds. Call NOW and you might still be able to reserve a dinner!

Activities : From the events at the Rock Hall, to a night out with the fish at the Aquarium, you could get all yoga twisty at a hot yoga class together or relax to the orchestra…find something special to do with your friends or honey to celebrate the day together. Get creative!

I hope some of my last minutes ideas were helpful and while I don’t mean to knock CVS…please people, we can do better than that! Happy (almost) Valentines!

  Stash Style 50% off SALE

It with mixed emotions that I write this post. My dear friend is closing her fabulous mecca of home accessories and unique furniture finds Stash Style in Chagrin Falls. The antique store and sweet shop has been nestled on Main Street across from the Popcorn Shop for over six years and has decided to move on to bigger and different initiatives.

Finds from her store helped furnish almost every room in my home including a behind the couch table, an outdoor dining set, numerous end tables, vintage linens, vases, frames, the list goes on and on.

This Saturday she is hosting a massive EVERYTHING IN THE STORE IS 50% MOVING SALE. Please go and buy your Stash Style finds or I am sure I will get roped into packing up a box truck and hauling it back to the west side. Though the day is bitter sweet I like to think of it as celebration of one woman’s dream of owning her own store. (We’ve all dreamt it.)

Plans for the future? A large barn sale in Rocky River is in the works for the first weekend in May, pencil it in as I’m sure it will be divine.

Hope to see everyone on Saturday, cheers to new ventures, cheers to change!

  weekend happenings

Last night I attended the Petittis Garden Center in Avons Holiday Open House. It was mobbed. Seriously people, already scooping up ornaments (buy two get one free) shopping for outdoor lights, wreaths and more. There were so many people they had parking lot attendants directing traffic. The thing I thought was so cool was the magical talking tree. I was going to snap the picture and the tree lady said to me “ooohhh, are you taking my picture? Let me smile real big for you!” I looked around as if I was dreaming, instantly being transformed into when I was a little kid. The excitement and joy of a singing tree? I can’t stand it. You’ve got to stop by their Holiday Open House weekend (at all locations) and see for yourself. Super cool!

Can you believe the “Speakeasy,” in the basement of Bier Market has been opened for a year now? Stop in Saturday night to the swanky underground culinary cocktail lounge as they will be celebrating their one year anniversary. Featuring a brand new fall/winter cocktail menu they will have DJ Go spinning the beats all night long.

Although All Saints Day is officially the day of Dia de Los Muertos, this weekend we are going to celebrate it! Join the community for the 6th Annual Day of the Dead  weekend celebration. A joyous multimedia artistic expression of the Mexican holiday that celebrates the cycle of life. Events will be held on both Saturday and Sunday. Plenty of Pan de Muerto (bread of the dead) for sale. Everything from face painting, to parade, music, dancers, altar displays and more. The festivities will take place at the Cleveland Public Theatre East Campus, 6205 Detroit Ave. Cleveland OH 44102. From 12- 10pm Click here, for more information.

Craving a french pastry or two? (I am.)  This years Cleveland Magazine “Best of Cleveland” Coquette Patisserie is bringing an extra-special treat to Saturday mornings Shaker Market.  A pecan tart laced with chocolate, coffee, and whisky. They’re calling it “Drivin’ Me Nuts”! It’s definitely not yo mamma’s pecan pie. PLUS, they sell all sorts of macaroons , they are light as air, they almost melt in your mouth.

Who said “Human beings are the only creatures that allow their children to come back home” or “Gray hair is God’s graffiti?” yes, you guessed it , the funky sweater wearing Mr. Bill Cosby. Feel like hearing him speak? Looking for a good laugh or two? Saturday night, Bill will be doing stand up at the Akron Civic Center. Tickets are still available.

This weekend the Cleveland Museum of Natural History will unveil it’s latest exhibit “Extreme Mammals.” I think this sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon, dodging the sleet, rain snow mixture while exploring all the interesting species the museum has to offer. The Biggest, Smallest and Most Amazing Mammals of All Time will be visiting Cleveland through April.

What else is everyone doing this weekend in Cleveland…besides staying warm?

  Prom anyone? (11/07)

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

The following is the official invite from Spaces gallery to this Saturday Night prom…it is so cleverly said, that I’ll let it speak for itself!

“Grab a date (or two), break out the boutonnieres, and call up your clique. For those who didn’t get asked, had too much “punch,” got kicked out for cross-dressing, or wore the wrong dress, here is your mulligan for the enchanted evening you were promised in high-school. Join us for our annual benefit party, Erie Prom: Enchantment Under the Lake. The big bash/splash will take place on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at SPACES. This night to remember begins with a VIP party and ends with a gallery chock full of great art for sale, games, campy photo opps (complete with the trellis), and dancing (without chaperones).

Paying homage to our Great Lake Erie, we claim the grand theme with a new twist. Remember: This is your do-over—YOUR prom. Creativity, outsiders and weirdness are not only condoned, but encouraged! Wear what you really wanted to wear the first time around, or come decked out in Lake Erie-inspired duds. Whether you feel pretty in pink, dapper in a tux or you want to flex those Zebra Mussels, this is your all-access hall-pass to one of Cleveland’s wildest parties of the year. Proceeds from the event make SPACES’ programming and operations possible.”
