  Pilates at Be Studios

So…it’s not everyday that I share a pic of me all sweaty and stinky, in weird poses, feeling very vulnerable…but here goes nothing.

Are you familiar with the boutique spa and fitness center on Clifton Blvd called Be Studios? OMG…if you aren’t you should be, it’s a gem of a fitness & wellness destination. The other day I met up with owner and pilates instructor Christina Anderson of Be Studios for her to walk me, step by step through a typical Pilates class series.

Pilates is a physical fitness system developed in the early 20th century by Joseph Pilates. You have to concentrate on what you’re doing all the time. And you must concentrate on your entire body for smooth movements. This was not easy, but in Pilates the way that exercises are done is more important than the exercises themselves.

Christina guided me through a basic footwork series, then we worked on legs, abs and lastly arms. To say it was a challenging workout is an understatement! While I had little expectations as to what Pilates was or how hard it would be…it sure did give me a run for my money… and I LOVED it!!!

Pilates at Be Studios is offered most days  and at a few time slots. The classes are kept small (I believe the max is 6 students) so you receive a lot of teacher/student attention as you glide up and down on your reformer machine. It seriously was a game changer with regards to a strength training experience. I can’t wait to go back.

Pricing for classes runs somewhere between $20 for an individual drop-in class all the way to $300 for a 20 class package. However for a limited time, if you want to swing by and take a lesson, they are currently offering half off to all new iheartcleveland students at $10 a class. Want to go check it out? I promise you won’t regret it. Can we even talk how I was sore for almost 3 days post-workout? The best kind of sore that is, but honestly it was such a nice feeling to feel muscles engaged that might not have been otherwise.

So give it a try…if I can do it you can too. Pilates…it’s sorta amazing!
Be Studios is located on Clifton Blvd at 10400 Clifton Boulevard, Cleveland, OH 44102

Goldfish Swim School : Water Safety Month!

In honor of May and Water Safety Month I wanted to share a bit about this incredible swim school we have been taking our little ninja to; Goldfish Swim School!

The staff at Goldfish is incredible. Every class, every point of contact with the parents is both professional and super fun. As parents, we love it almost as much as he does. When Saturday mornings roll around he knows to go and get into his swim shorts and that it is time to “kick kick kick” and “pull pull pull.” There are lots of water toys to keep the little swimmers interested in engaged, learning made fun in the water!

With summer on the horizon the team at Goldfish is celebrating May and Water Safety Month with a party! Join them this Saturday, May 14 from 2-5pm for their special family day including family swim, in-water safety stations, snacks (hot dogs & snow cones) face-painting and so much more. $5/swimmer or $15 max per family. Children under 2 swim free. (A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Swim for Diabetes.)

Seriously, I really have enjoyed our time at Goldfish. I think it is imperative to teach little people to swim and be comfortable in and around the water. What better place to learn than someplace with super fun instructors, lots of great water toys, in a safe and clean environment. Did I mention the air and water is always at 90 degrees…total tropical luxury!

Happy Swimming everyone. I hope to see you on Saturday, learn to swim, let’s get ready for summer.

Copper salmon_final

It’s that time again friends…time for the annual Copper River Salmon Run/Walk 5k on Saturday, May 21 in Lakewood sponsored by our friends at Pier W.

I’ve been really trying to get back into my running grove lately and this happening is the perfect goal to shoot for. The race celebrates Alaska’s Copper River salmon season, and proceeds benefit Cleveland’s Malachi House. The course is a great neighborhood race through some of Lakewood’s best tree-lined, century-home laden streets.

What makes the race so popular is that participants gather on Pier W’s patio afterward to relax and enjoy lunch, which is included in the registration fee. A lunch-only option also is available for those who can’t partake in the race. Chef Regan Reik also will join participants on the patio and will be on the grill, cooking up Copper River salmon burgers, vegan black bean burgers, standard all-beef burgers and turkey dogs for lunch.

Registration begins on race day at 9 a.m. at Lakewood Park’s Outdoor Pavilion (14532 Lake Ave.,Lakewood) and the race begins at 10am Sign up here!

Want to win a free race registration? Tweet me “@iheartclev I’d love to run/walk the @PierW Copper River Salmon Run, Saturday the 21st!”…It’s a quick contest, winner to be drawn tomorrow, May 10th. So get ready to lace up those sneakers, it’s gonna be a fun race & a delicious lunch.

  CLE ski

Screen Shot 2015-01-26 at 7.55.32 AM

Happy snowy Monday to you! I am back from Alt Summit and revived, inspired and even more enthusiastic about all that we have going on in the CLE!

I spoke with many individuals, some from San Fran a few from the big apple and honestly everyone said something to the effect of “I hear there is great stuff happening in Cleveland.” “There is!” I would rejoice and then dive into my schpeal about how they should visit, how we have so much happening, how the restaurants are delicious and the Lake is divine. I think I will have a few visitors this summer and I couldn’t be more thrilled.

Now that I am home and spent yesterday putting away all of our holiday decorations (I know…super late!) I am ready to spend the next few weekends, embracing winter on the slopes. I didn’t get to ski last year due to the impending Ninja Max so this year I want to soak it all in and enjoy playing in the snow.

Just a quick rundown on the various ski resorts that you could visit…

Boston Mills Brandywine : A quick drive south to this ski destination duo, with two different slopes there is plenty of winter fun for the whole family. From “an evening with the dudes” to “college night” to “ladies late night” there is an event for everyone and the perfect excuse to round up your friends for winter fun outdoors.

Peek ‘n Peak : Just across the NY boarder this ski resort offers amazing snow fun. In fact January is learn to ski/board month and the are offering buy one get one packages for all newbies on the slopes. Along with the great snow Peek’n Peak also has an adorable ski chalet hotel, sunken bar for aprés and an Aveda spa to soothe your sore muscles. While it’s the perfect overnight escape you can also make this destination a day trip if you and your friends are willing to make the road trip together.

Holiday Valley : Nestled in the charming village of Ellicotville NY this ski resort has winter fun for the whole family. From the kids learn to ski school to the many lodging and dining options, this winter resort includes all sorts of fun for all. From an early morning run on the slopes to an evening stroll in the village, when visiting this ski town you’ll feel like you are out west.

Snowtrails : While I haven’t visited this southern ski destination I do know many families that have and love it. Great for families with lots of beginner slopes this winter play destination can be bundled with a trip to Columbus…and we all know how much I love a good Columbus road trip! Perhaps it’s time I go check it out.

So enjoy this recent snowfall, unpack your ski pants and plan a weekend ski bunny outing soon! If we live in here, we might as well embrace the winter weather and get outdoors for some fresh air and winter play.

Happy Monday everybody. Glad to be home with you all.
