  currently loving in CLE…EARLY April!

How is it possible that it is already April 1st? I mean March totally flew by. Last month I spent the evenings (the few weeks leading up to my time at Alt Summit) working on my workshop talk, sewing a mod-inspired dress and strategically packing my outfits for the conference. Then I was away for a whole week attending my 4th Alt Summit spending time with other creative entrepreneurs, visionaries and influencers. This past weekend we basically spent quality family time playing in the snow, lots of laundry and a bunch of weekly food prep..no more vacation treats for me! Anyhow, long story short …where did March go?

I am going to kick off April with a few things I am LOVING…hope you enjoy!

With the exception of Saturday night, for the most part, the snow and ice have melted and at our house, we can see the tiny tulip shoots just starting to peak above ground. I am totally starting to daydream about our outside spring plantings; including figuring out what old, overgrown shrubs I can take out and what will go in its place. If anyone has an uber-green thumb or knows any landscapers who might be interested in a collaboration…send them my way! I just want to make sure I am not literally pulling out a hydrangea that currently looks like dead weeds. Besides plants, I am also dreaming up ways to make out outdoor patio furniture POP this spring. Can you say…spray paint and new upholstery? Bring on the warmer temps…bring on the Rustoleum!

With all the dreaming of summer, It’s becoming pretty obvious, we still have a few more weeks of cooler temps and winter coats. It’s okay though, today I am going to tell you about some great INDOOR spring fun you can take advantage off while the weather is still a bit chilly.

Have kids that are dying to run around and get out of the house? I have two fun ideas for you!

First, you’ve GOT to check out the newest exhibit at the Great Lakes Science Center called Zoom! We took our little Ninja there one evening and were pleasantly surprised by how fun it was for both kids and us; the parents. The exhibit highlights the various aspects of cars and everything to do with driving, engines, and aerodynamics. Everything from how gasses produce energy (to move cars) to how to build & race your own cars, to faux-working on cars (our little guy somehow instinctively knew how to slide under the hood and install a muffler, What?) and even teaching the idea of streamlined aerodynamics to toddlers…the exhibit is awesome! I believe it runs until the end of the summer so go now while it is still a bit chilly or put it on your rainy day, play destination list. It’s really fun for everyone, promise.

Secondly, it’s been a while since we’ve been to the Greater Cleveland Aquarium but we went last Saturday and it was super fun for us and our 4-year-old. Mr. C and I visited the Aquarium way back when it first opened but this trip was different, A) because we now have a 4 yr old who relishes in any museum-like opportunity but B) because everything seems to have grown up and settled into their own fish-tank-home. The Greater Cleveland Aquarium is a super fun place to visit on those gray days between now and CLE Spring when you want to feel like you are at the Lake or at the coral reef (you choose!) its truly a “refreshing” destination. We especially enjoyed the live presentation of the scuba divers and the stingrays that you were able to touch as they swam on by.

What else am I loving right now? I am always excited about the annual Cleveland International Film Festival! You might even see me in some of this year’s festival creative… thanks to the team over at Type 27 for including my mug in the signage and trailer to the festival! Besides being part of the creative assets of this year’s festival, I am already planning out my viewing schedule, with cocktail breaks in the lobby of the Ritz Carlton (Turn!) penciled in! The Cleveland International Film Festival brings the BEST on new indie/artistic films to Cleveland for us to enjoy. Make sure to get your tickets today!

Speaking about cocktails…and springtime events…have you bought your tickets to this years Down and Derby party, hosted by Boys Hope, Girls Hope yet? Mr. C and I attended last year and as someone who gets to attend many not for profit happenings in town, this event was hands-down one of the best. I am super excited about it being hosted at Tenk; I’ve been wanting to see this space.

Last but for sure not least…GO, TRIBE! Looking forward to the sun coming ut and warming up our city for an afternoon, baseball home opener. To everyone going downtown for the game, dress warm and have so much fun!

So this is basically my March favorite picks and such…since I was so busy last month. I promise to check back in with a few more awesome things happening in and around the CLE this April. Cheers!

my holiday gift guide…a few suggestions!

Hello & Happy holidays friends! Can you even believe it? Time for turkey and pumpkin pie, visits to Santa and cookie swaps. It’s time for making your own lists and checking them twice making sure to be less naughty and to be way more nice.

For the past six or seven years, I have approached fellow small business owners for a gift donation to my yearly “twelve days of giveaways”…and while it was fun to feature some of my favorite businesses, this year I thought I would start by encouraging you to shop local with some of the best in town! Don’t worry…there will be a giveaway too..but just one…and closer to Christmas…stay tuned for more on that.

But for today and in the spirit of a small, local gift guide here are a few things I would recommend as the perfect gifts for your CLE friends around town. Let me know if I missed anything.

For your mom, sisters, best friends or gal pals around town.
• I found the best knit sweaters, hats and blanket-throws last week at Whiskey Grade. While I typically wouldn’t think of them as a destination for women’s apparel and housewares, this store has so many awesome girly gifts, I promise you will check someone off your list there.

• Have you been by the new GrooveRyde studio downtown or the original Woodmere location? A gift certificate to this new hot spot would be welcomed by any one of your fitness-loving friends. I love their spinning studio but I’ve really been wanting to try my hand (ha ha!) at their fitness boxing classes. Get your gal pal a few gift cards and the two of you can keep each other accountable to fitness during the holiday season.

• It’s cold outside and during these winter months it is really important to give our skin extra attention. With that said, I LOVE the facials that Leia at Flower Power Skin Studio in Lakewood offers. Not only is her studio super retro-chic, all of her products are organic and good for you! Don’t think you need a facial, then swing by on her special retail days to shop her moisturizers, soaps, fragrance and makeup lines that are too good to be true. For hours and information visit her instagram account…it’s so good!

• I do love a good candle at home during these chilly months. For some reason when there is a candle glowing in the kitchen it makes everything better, warmer, feels more like home. I would say, hands down the women of Sweet Dish & Darling Candles are my absolute favorite candle makers in town. My favorite scent? I LOVE Sunday Brunch but keep wanting to try the Pumpkin & Coconut.

• An incredible manicure! Every lady loves a good fancy-mani for the holidays, am I right? A bit of gold glitter, something more traditional like a clean red polish, perhaps each nail illustrated as Santa and his reindeer? Whatever your fancy, the ladies at Stella & Shay have been killing it with my monthly manicures as of late. I’ve received so many compliments and inquiries that I have my appointments scheduled out a few months in advance. Looking for a gift certificate for one of the best manicures in town, look no further than Stella & Shay!

For your better half, your man friend or your little brother.
• I recently discovered an incredible line of cocktail mixes made in Columbus, OH called Root 23 cocktail mixes. You can find them at a handful of boutiques around town including Natures Oasis in Lakewood and Happy Hour Collection in downtown CLE. I love their Vanilla Ginger with a shot of Maker’s…makes the perfect Manhattan.

• What man-friend doesn’t love a piping hot bowl of fresh ramen noodles? Have you had the chance to get out to the new Noodlecat at Crocker Park yet? I went last week with a group of work friends and it was seriously so good. I had something totally spicy and then a fried shrimp steamed bun and I honestly can’t wait to go back with my honey to try out a few other dishes. A gift certificate would be an awesome gift to use as an excuse for a great date night night out!

• The talented duo over at Room Service had a few things that I would TOTALLY pick up for my Mr. including a new crazy-cool line of military-inspired watches (above) as well as some gorgeous, custom-made backpacks and leather goods. (below)

For your little ones!
• Have you been to the new Children’s Museum of Cleveland? Wouldn’t that be an incredible gift to anyone with small Cleveland kiddos? I know at our house it’s more about experiences than things, so I would welcome this fun gift! $80 for a family membership sounds pretty reasonable for the entire year for 3 people. I think this would be close to the top of any family wish list this year. Get your new memberships here.

• I think that gifting a camp experience is a wonderful gift for any CLE kid. Become a member of the Nature Center at Shaker Lakes and you can register for camp early before the open registration rush that happens in early January. I am so excited that our little one will be old enough for a camp experience this upcoming summer and so is he. Give the gift of nature camp…your kids will never forget it!

• Cookies! What little person doesn’t love a good cookie? From Blackbird Baking Company’s chocolate chip cookies to the gorgeous details of Luna Bakery sugar cookies, our city is bursting with talented bakers. They are the “go-to’s” for when you want to give a box of cookies to any kid (or adult) with a sweet tooth. Cookies make everyone happy. :)

• Baseball anyone? Have you been up to the Kids Clubhouse at Progressive Field during an Indian’s game? If you haven’t, gift a few tickets to a game next summer to see this space & the game…of course. It has great seating with awesome views, lots of toys, interactive exhibits and slides for the kiddos, phone charging stations for the parents and the cutest mini restrooms the whole gang will enjoy. While individual tickets aren’t on sale yet, you can pick up a gift card or give your little fan an IOU for summer tickets and a chance to visit the Kids Clubhouse with the Indians! Get your 2018 Indians tickets here.

• Books, Books & more Books! Every kid loves a good book. Whether they are like my 3-yr old toddler who flips through a handful of books at lightning speed or perhaps a more mature kid who can sit and enjoy a chapter book over the holidays…everyone loves a book. I recently took the time to visit Horizontal Books on West 25th in Ohio City. This independent book store has some really useful sections including an entire area devoted to kids books. They have some really unique and different books that you might not find at the bog box stores. Grab a latte and then head over to Horizontal to pick out a few good books for your little ones.

So those are just a handful of  a few holiday gift ideas for you and your loved ones. I hope I was able to inspire you and give you a few creative ideas to make our holiday shopping enjoyable! Remember, stay tuned for a good giveaway as we get closer to the holiday! Happy shopping everyone.

  Our Westin staycation fun!

IMG_3849

Good morning & happy Wednesday friends. I hope we have all recovered from our CLE weekends and are settling into a productive work week. I still can’t get over what fun our little family had this past weekend, let me fill you in.

We had been invited to spend the night at The Westin Cleveland and experience their summer Indians Baseball Getwaway Package…or in our case the ultimate, summer, downtown STAYCATION!!!

It was going to be Baby Ninja’s first night in a hotel room and our first time packing him up to hang out in the city for the weekend. We had fantastic weather, our friends were keeping old man Sir Franklin the pug and we were all set to head off into the (slightly) unknown.

When I say “unknown” it isn’t that downtown Cleveland is unknown, it was the idea of how this whole evening/overnight would shake down with our adventurous toddler…but low and behold he loved it. You can tell he has got his mom’s trait of ultimate “wanderlust” and I know there will be many staycations in our future.

We checked into our room late afternoon and the little guy was so curious, exploring every nook and cranny of this cool new room…which by the way had very chic carpeting making running exceptionally easy for a toddler. As Baby Ninja bounced around from bed to chair to pounding on the 19th floor windows that overlooked the city we took inventory of how child-proofed our room was and gave it two thumbs up.

IMG_3845IMG_3846

That’s me trying to keep my lovely little ninja out of the shower and my toiletries…note to self..do not unpack your makeup bag where the little guy can reach everything…he loves expensive powder… Check out the stunning walk-in shower tiles in our room, the patterns were so fun. The interior of the room and every detail was very well done, did you know that the artwork in each of the rooms were commissioned by actual Northeast Ohio artists, you can find out more about the individual artists and their work here.

After exploring our room it was time to check out the club for a bit of happy hour…or “happy :15 minutes with a toddler” but still SO COOL. The two floor space overlooked the city and Lake Erie and was filled with guests from all over. As I filled a little plate of cheese and strawberries for Baby Ninja (and olives & prosciutto for me and Mr. C) I enjoyed easvedropping on conversations of visitors to Cleveland. From what I could tell everyone was amazed at how hopping our city was and what an amazing surprise it was to see the place exploding with visitors and activities. Go Cleveland!

IMG_3848IMG_3847

After a few snacks it was time to go roam about downtown. With so much construction and prepping for next years convention it seems like every time I’m downtown there is something new to be seen. We walked through the malls, strolled by the new conversion center, tried to peer through the construction fences of Public Square…it was all really cool.

When we got back to our room it was time to put the little guy asleep in his Westin Heavenly Crib to which he zonked out immediately. Time for a bit of room service and Rosé for us parentals and then everyone enjoyed a great nights sleep…can we say AC? (Note : for those of us who don’t have air conditioning a Staycation is the perfect exuse to enjoy the cool temps a hotel room offers…I swear we all slept great that night!)

The next morning after some breakfast and Starbucks; yes folks..there is a real live Starbucks in the lobby of The Westin… we watched all of the incredible Cleveland triathlon athletes compete to complete their own personal best. It was a wonderful morning with a great breeze off the lake (good for spectators, bad for athletes,) Baby Ninja has recently figured out clapping, so every runner, cyclist and swimmer got huge cheers from us.

We headed back into downtown for some brunch (while the little guy took a morning nap in his jogger stroller….thank goodness for these strollers, they are a lifesaver like that)  and then back to our room to prep for the big game.

As part of the Westin’s summer getaway series they are partnering with the Indians to offer an overnight stay complete with $50 towards tickets or whatever else you’d like to spend it on. We got bleacher seats and headed into the shade for most of the game. It was especially fun as we got to finally use our backpack that Mr. C had purchased for the babes before he was even born…plus we got him a baseball cap to match his dads, so sweet.

While the guys were enjoying splitting a 10-inch stadium hotdog, I discovered the moscow mule booth where you get a refreshing afternoon drink complete with copper mug…to which I DID bring home…Mom’s Souvenir!!!

So all in all I couldn’t have asked for a better experience staying downtown Cleveland at The Westin, exploring our city as a sorta-tourist and then capping off the adventure with a wonderful afternoon baseball experience. Win or not, there were smiles and giggles and we saw Slider and we felt like we had conquered the world…just by packing up, and staying downtown for one night.

It’s amazing how sometimes a change of scenery in your own city will make you so invigorated and thankful for everything we have as Clevlanders. I highly recommend you trying the staycation thing…it was awesome.

Thanks to all the staff at The Westin Cleveland for making our trip so memorable…especially the doorman for helping me push the giant jogging stroller to and from and not making me go through the revolving doors. HA! We will for sure be visiting you all again someday…hopefully sooner than later. Happy staycations everyone…cheers to summer in our city.

I was provided an overnight stay at The Westoin Cleveland  as part of their public relations efforts. Thanks for supporting these businesses that allow me to create special content like this for iheartcleveland!

  New Eats at Progressive Field

IMG_2731Hey Cleveland, happy friday! Hope your week was amazing and that your weekend plans are shaping up nicely. We have sort of a light commitment weekend, although our house is in desperate need of a good cleaning including a good scrub down of some of our outdoor living space. Power washing here we come!

IMG_2725

The other day, I had the opportunity to go to a Tribe day and it was  the perfect day for a game. Not too hot, not too windy, just right. Last summer I was  tending to our newborn-Ninja Max and not able to get to any games, this was my first one at the renovated stadium.

Upon arrival, I was pretty impressed at all of the new dining options avilable. In “The District” there are a handful of small stands offering everything from mini hotdog trios to tacos and grilled cheese. The options were so much more than the standard hotdog and nachos options…of course you could still enjoy these too.

IMG_2729We actually split a L’Albatros burger from Dynomite Burgers and honestly it was a really good burger. Way better than I had expected it to be, I was impressed. Of course as a Zach Bruell restaurant I wouldn’t expect anything less, he always “hits it out of the park!”
(sorry, I couldn’t help it! Ha!)

IMG_2728IMG_2724

IMG_2730IMG_2727IMG_2726

Next time you have the opportunity to catch a game and want to get something good, don’t worry about having to stop somewhere first, there are plenty of new options available at the park. Everything from tacos and nachos to gourmet burgers and homemade ice cream, you won’t be disappointed!

Have a great weekend everyone. Go Tribe! Go weekends!

  Ohio City Harvest Festival

Hey Cleveland. Such a gorgeous week so far. Time to hit those corn mazes and pumpkin patches this weekend for sure. How have your weeks been? Did everyone watch the TRIBE last night? Amazing game, keep up the great job Indians! And did we even talk about the BROWNS? Looking good team, keep up the great job this weekend with the upcoming home game.

A big CONGRATS goes out to “chell” (@sweetfructose) for winning the lucky pass to the upcoming Cleveland Craft Connection all day workshop! You go girl! If you still want to go but didn’t win, don’t fret…there is an iheartcleveland DISCOUNT CODE…. For $50 off your registration (what a deal) use the code “iheart50” at registration, that should make the day’s events even sweeter. Looking forward to seeing everyone there!Screen shot 2013-09-25 at 1.03.26 PM

If you are already planning fun stuff for your upcoming fall weekend…I think the Ohio City Harvest Festival looks lovely. Saturday from 12-4pm…PLUS there is a PIE BAKING CONTEST for all of you expert bakers out there…I’m more of a cake kinda baker, but love a good blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream! Music, food, pie, a great afternoon in the OC? GO THERE!

Until then have a great rest of your week, we will chat more real soon. I’m working on some fun blog stuff this week so sit tight! peace.
