Explore CLE : an afternoon in Old Brooklyn

Hello & happy snowstorm weekend to all. Did you enjoy your snowy Sunday? Were you snowed in and binge-watching Netflix for most of the weekend? Did you get some cooking and “tidying up” completed? Did you brave the snow and go out and play? All in all, it was an incredible weekend, the snow made it magical and I hope we get more soon.

While we weren’t doing a ton of driving around town this weekend, LAST weekend we enjoyed playing tourist in our own city. Destination? Old Brooklyn!

Can you believe I truly haven’t spent any time in this hip, up and coming neighborhood? Me neither! I’ve heard so many great things about the area and I see every foodie blogger hanging out in that hood…I had to check it out myself.

Stop #1 • We started the adventure at the new Lilly’s Chocolates; on W. Schaaf Rd. It has a new, lovely corner spot, with an adjacent parking lot making it easy to get in and out quickly. The store is a bit smaller than their last location in Tremont but it is extra chock full of chocolate creations, making it just as SWEET! This new store offers some extra special treats that weren’t available at their other location, including their fruit jellies which are delicious. Anyhow, I was so excited to go explore this new store, same Lilly’s Chocolates exquisite in every way!

Stop #2 • After chocolate-tasting it was time for a cup-of-joe so we headed to the most adorable part bike shop, part coffee destination…Coffee. Coffee. Coffee! The shop was hoping and the barista was whipping out creative coffee offerings in record time. The space is adorable, reminds of a coffee shop I used to go to in college in Syracuse. It has high ceilings, loads of great light and the coffee counter is someplace I could spend an entire afternoon hanging out at. Next time Mr. C. & I are headed home from a visit to the zoo, we will FOR SURE swing by Coffee. Coffee. Coffee., for my favorite; an almond milk latte.

Stop #3 • Last stop that afternoon was at Old Brooklyn Cheese Company. We sampled a bunch of cheese, learned more about their cheese making process and also had some really yummy, homemade mustards. The cheesemakers at 4138 Pearl Road are producers of cave-aged, non-GMO raw cow’s milk cheese’s…simply delicious. For the last year, I haven’t been eating dairy but with all of these local, artisan cheeses I had to buy one and it didn’t dissappoint…everything in moderation. If you are looking for an interesting cheese to add to your next cheese board or to bring as a hostess gift head on over to the cheese specialists at Old Brooklyn Cheese!

Old Brooklyn has a lot of cool things happening and it was fun to play tourist in my own city. If you haven’t gone exploring through that part of town, make a date with a friend and go hungry…there are so many foodie businesses, I will for sure be craving chocolate, coffee, and cheese real soon. :)

  Love is in the air!

Max(Couldn’t help but post this little pic of Baby Ninja trying to get into my desk when I wasn’t looking. He is my best Valentine this year for sure…well of course him and Mr. C.)

Here at iheartcleveland it’s the week for celebrating LOVE! Love of our city, love of our friends, love of our lake, love of all the amazing foodie hot spots around town, love of all the awesome arts & culture destinations. Today I wanted to put together a few fun things I am loving and happenings that are going on around town in the celebration of this weeks Valentine’s holiday.

EATING OUT : I know we all love to go out to dinner from time to time, and while I am not a big fan of actually heading out to dinner on February 14th, I’m not opposed to celebrating at anytime from now till early net week. Here are a few holiday hot spots I may try and hit up.
Urban Farmer, has a great brunch and incredible morning cocktails, this Sunday make your reservation as they are hosting a Valentine’s Buffet brunch complete with a toast bar (chocolate chip banana bread!) omelet stations and locally cured morning meats, yummy!
Punch Bowl Social : Where can you go for bowling, a dash of ping pong and an awesome romantic dinner for you and your bestie? Punch Bowl Social CLE!!! Make a reservation and start planning your visit to include the “Loves Me; Loves Me Not” adult punch (bourbon, lemon juice & maraschino cherries) a few bacon wrapped dates, steak & gruyere potato pancakes and mini tiramisu shots. Sign me up! (if you already have hearts day plans, “kids bowl free” on President’s Day, so you could always go on Monday?)
Sarita in Lakewood : Have you checked out the new Sarita’s in Lakewood (Old Players on Madison)? Chef Tony Romano and his team have a very special dinner planned for all you love birds out there…complete with chocolate dipped strawberries. Visit their new site for the complete menu and make sure to call for your reservation, it will for sure book up fast.

Happenings : There are so many great things happening around town to woo your honey’s heart with. Here is a short list of a few exciting weekend happenings.
• “I don’t know where I’m going from here, but I promise it won’t be boring.”
David Bowie Memorial Show at the Beachland Ballroom this Friday night! Bring your main squeeze for some Bowie tunes performed by many of the areas best musicians.
• Yoga & Chocolate : At Krysia Energy Yoga on Center Ridge Road in Westlake. Gather your fellow yoga loving friends and enjoy some sweet time on your mat. After your practice indulge in a few handmade chocolates from Tremont’s Lilly Chocolates!
Face Value by Bob Dylan : I know we think of Bob Dylan as a musician but did you know he painted portraits of people while on tour? Or that he loved to weld artistic gates? This international exhibit of Dylan’s work has been curated by the National Portrait Gallery and has recently found a home at Kent State University. Wouldn’t an afternoon in an art gallery be a magical Valentine’s Day date? Bring your sweetie to see the show which runs now through March 5th.
Galentines Party at ReDress – Grab your girly friends and head over to hang with Rachel and her team at ReDress in Lakewood. While you are browsing the fashions and awesome jewels get your hair braided (braid crowns!!!) your makeup done, a mini massage and lots of sweet treats and cocktails while you enjoy tunes by DJ Genna Petrolla!
Art with your family : Sunday is family fun day at the Cleveland Museum of Art. That means free art projects with your littlest Valentines’. Activities begin at 11, its a wonderful place to bring your pack for some good hands-on art fun, promise.

Whatever you do with your friends and family during this season for celebrating love, have fun & stay warm Cleveland. Happy Valentines Day to you!

How I do the CLE Int FILM FEST!

ffHey CLE! How has your week been? I think the spring-weather-gods are shining down on us, its so wonderful not to have to wear ten layers to get out the door in the morning. I heart SPRING in the 216, everyone seems lighter, brighter and overall more kind to one another when the weather turns from cold to mild….and then the FILM FEST rolls into town and makes everything better!!!

Have you picked up your film program and planned your Cleveland International Film Festival experience yet? I am counting the days till the excitement rolls into town.  Every year, my mom comes for a visit and we binge watch a handful of films that I select for us. I try and pick a documentary, an “artsy” film, something from France and when available a light, romantic comedy.

This year I have selected a handful of good ones including one I am especially excited about…The Wolfpack. It’s a documentary about a family of six adult children who live in New York City but have no interaction with society thanks to their “alpha male” father. Instead, they learn how the world exists through thousands of movies they watch and creatively reenact at home. It really looks to be both bizarre and wonderful all rolled into one incredible movie. What movies are you excited about?

When I am headed down to Terminal Tower for a few solid hours of film fest, I have specific “must have’s” that I bring with me. I bring a stylish tote bag like the Curtin Tote designed and produced locally by Blair Ritchey. I fill it with the typical toiletries including tissues for those emotional flicks, lip balm for when the theaters are dry and a hand sanititzer for all the RTA yucky-ness. I highly advise bringing a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated and to deter you from filling up on theatre soda. I also like to bring a healthy snack such as an apple for between movie munchies. If you are feeling indulgent a Lilly’s of Tremont chocolate bar and a small can of Sofia champagne in a can is also a film fest treat.

I like to wear slip on shoes; stylish sneakers or flats work well for getting comfy during the movies. Dress in layers as sometimes the theaters are a bit chilly or a little hot…it always helps to have options.

Sometimes between movies I like to slip away to the Ritz Carlton Cleveland or a drink at their Lobby Bar on Six. They typically offer film fest drink specials and even a few movie-themed cocktails, plus you never know what actor or filmmaker you might spot hanging out between films.

Give yourself enough time to park and get in line for your movie, I like to estimate arriving almost 30-40 before my films begin. You can always meet fellow film goers, explore the festivals silent auction or shop the always-creative film gift shop.

The film fest kick off next week. If you haven’t purchased tickets remember to go online and choose a few movies before films sell out. Happy film fest everyone, I look forward to seeing you at the movies!

  The “taste”

Screen Shot 2014-07-16 at 1.56.48 PM

Hi Cleveland. Such a gorgeous day! I am loving the cooler temps…just a little break from the summer heat and humidity.

All is well over here with me and Baby Ninja. I’m slowly accepting the lack of sleep, frequent diaper changes and feedings round the clock as my new normal. His sweet cuddles, little fingers and toes and his cute little sounds make this time in our life perfect in every way. I can’t wait to see what our future holds with this little man.

I am especially looking forward to re-discovering so many things about our city through the eyes of a child. For example, while I’ve been to the annual summer ADULT bash Twighlight at the Zoo, I bet going to the zoo with a small person is like exploring the best vintage store; an explosive discovery at every turn…I can’t wait.

While I’ve typically gone to The Taste of Tremont (aka The “Taste”) later in the day for a “Sunday Funday;” with little ones in tow, an early “in” and a good escape route “out” ensures everyone in the family has a good time. The Taste is the perfect way to sample many of the unique restaurants this Cleveland neighborhood has to offer.

Personally I love anything from Dante, can’t wait to gorge on sushi from Ginko (haven’t enjoyed spicy tuna in 9 months!) and a piece of chocolate from Lilly’s sounds like a delightful afternoon. Plan to carpool as parking is always at a premium, go hungry and brings cash. As of now the weather is supposed to be warm and sunny, perfect for those sundresses and shades. Hope to see you there…baby temper-tantrum permitting!

Cheers guys, chat more soon.

  Lulu’s Candy Jar

Happy Tuesday everybody. Did you have a sweet Valentines Day? We had a great day including a romantic lunch at Parallax followed by a stop for some treats at Lilly’s Chocolates and then dinner at our friends home in Lakewood topped off with slow dancing in their living room; it was the perfect holiday.

The rest of the weekend was pretty nice as well, wasn’t all the sunshine and snow wonderful? And Bite Winter Fest was awesome as ever; great job to all of the organizers and volunteers. Sunday I went to a baby shower, did a bit of style shopping for this weekends Jump Back Ball and got some design work under my belt to prep for the busy week ahead.

I have been having a few issues with my blog software so I apologize for the delay in posting as of late. Looks like my account is up and running again and the hackers have given up trying to take over the iheart acount. Phew!

Many of you have been sending me lots of little notes of congrats and such about our impending bundle of “baby ninja” joy. Thanks to everyone for all your kind words; we couldn’t feel more elated and blessed…and YES…while this social space won’t change all together an occasional baby’s room, family day out and “wee-one” centric post might be in the future…i’m just sayin.

The other day we were out and about at Crocker Park and noted a new sweet spot that hadn’t been there before, Lulu’s Candy Jar. It was is the perfect spot to dodge the cold temps and gloomy winter weather if you are out that way. They offer made to order flavored popcorn, rows and rows of jelly beans, every flavor of fruit slice and so many novelties it’s hard to even mention them. I was particularly drawn to the back interior wall wallpaper of graphic candy jars..too cute for words.

With all this snow and the kiddos home from school (& many parents starting to go crazy!) I thought you might like an excuse for a sugar high and a trip to Westlake to explore this new sweet store. Check it out.

Touch base with you all real soon! Cheers.
