  May at MOCA

Well hello there!  Now that the weather is warming up, the rain clouds are clearing up and the sun is shining-finally, it’s time to get back on the exploring-the-216-bandwagon.

So many fun things happening around town! I noticed that the team over at MOCA is hosting some very unique events this month, some of them will even sell out so you’ve got to register; like yesterday. Check out three of the events I think sound awesome and for the full event listing visit their site.

Friday, May 8th @ 7:30 (THIS Friday!)
BFA Party: A Toast to CIA’s Graduating Seniors
FREE and open to all

Come congratulate graduating seniors of the Cleveland Institute of Art after they present their capstone projects: their bachelor of fine arts (BFA) thesis exhibitions. Each CIA senior is required to present an exhibition of his or her work, displaying skill, voice, and vision developed in their undergraduate years. The artwork will be displayed for the public in CIA’s Gund and McCullough buildings.

At 7:30pm the celebration begins at MOCA; and at 8:30pm CIA will announce the winners of its President’s Traveling Scholarships, the cash awards that enable six graduates to travel and pursue special projects. Finish off the evening with a walk across the street to Coquette Patisserie for french sweets that’s what inspiring artists dreams are made of!

MOCA Cleveland and Lake View Cemetery present a special, two-part tour in connection with the Museum’s current exhibition, DIRGE: Reflections on [Life and] Death. After meeting at MOCA, visitors will board Lolly the Trolley to embark on a guided tour through the picturesque and historic Lake View Cemetery. Traveling through time, visitors will view monuments spanning the cemetery’s 145 year history and learn about the special symbols and imagery used to express beliefs about death at different times. This tour will be followed by a guided tour through MOCA Cleveland’s current exhibition, DIRGE, that will reflect on similar themes of grief, memory, and commemoration as expressed in art today.

There are two tour opportunities, the first tour starting at 11am and the second beginning at 1pm. Each tour is the same and ticket price includes both guided tours. Tickets must be prepaid online prior to the tour.

  Dirge at MOCA

Today I wanted to share with you a recent trip to MOCA to see the new spring/summer exhibition called DIRGE, Reflections on (Life and) Death.

photo 3(Steve Lambert’s, You Are Still Alive)

While sometimes contemporary art seems a bit “over my head,” I have to say experiencing this exhibit with a docent-lead-tour opened my eyes to the various interpretations of the heavy exhibit themes; life and death.

The interactive exhibit allows the viewer to step inside the creative minds of some of the countries most influential contemporary artists and experience everything from a video montage, to an artists take on album cover artwork to a very interesting work of two hanging lightbulbs…you MUST hear the story/concept behind this piece to fully appreciate its’ meaning.

photo 2(Or tour was so insightful, I highly recommend it!)

Not only is the exhibit astounding, the programming they have planned to accompany the show is really pushing the envelopes including their hands on taxidermy class on May 30th. Register today for the many classes as spots are limited.

I highly encourage a tour of this exhibit to truly understand the ideas behind each piece, it was well worth my afternoon and I think you will agree with me. The show will but up through June 8th, so take an afternoon and go immerse yourself in some Cleveland contemporary art.

  Friday fun!

PHS(Playhouse Square, Ohio Theatre all dressed up for the holidays. Beautiful)

Happy Friday everybody. How was your week? With the holidays quickly approaching at my house I have been so busy cleaning, organizing and beginning to prep for family, my nights have been busy ones. I tried to get a jump start on company entertaining last weekend by making two massive lasagnas as an easy warm up for my out-of-town family while they are visiting. With a small-ish kitchen anything I can do ahead of time to prep for entertaining makes the weekend activities go so much smoother and stress free. Last night I finally worked on the Thanksgiving menu and let’s just say it’s going to be so yummy. This weekend I will continue on organizing (must organize hall closet), decorating (prepping the turkey day tablescape) and perhaps making a few crusts for the coordinating Thanksgiving cookies, tarts and pies…it’s beginning to feel a lot like the holidays!

Once – I want to start off today’s run down by telling every music lover, every romantic, every play-going Clevelander to try and get a pair of tickets to see Once at Playhouse Sqauer. We went this past Tuesday night and I can’t gush enough about the amazing performance. I literally had no idea what the show was going to be about. I had not seen the movie, or listened to the soundtrack but as a theatre goer knew it was going to be a smash hit. We laughed, we cried, we even had our hearts broken a bit, but I can not tell you when I have enjoyed a musical THIS MUCH! For ticket availability just click on the little ad to the right of this post or visit Playhouse Square. The show has a short run so seriously try your best to experience Once…it was magical.

Piada – The latest in Italian Street Food opens TODAY in Rocky River. Pick it up this weekend for sure. (19925 Center Ridge Road)

MOCA Artscape – Tonight I am going to check out the very cool art, jewelry and design holiday gift show at MOCA. The public preview will run tonight from 5-9 ($8 for non members) and then be open all day Saturday 11-5pm. Check it out in the new museum space, I can’t wait to see how they set up this shopping soireé!

Carlos Jones & John Legend – are NOT playing together (but wouldn’t that be a cool pairing?) On Saturday night Carlos Jones will be at Brothers Lounge and John Legend will be at the State Theatre. Saturday night is a great night to see some live music!

Special iheartcleveland & J.Crew holiday style shopping party evening! – Yep, join me at J.Crew Crocker Park next Wednesday evening November 20th, from 6-8pm for a special night out. See the new holiday gifts & fashions, have a sweet treat while you shop, enjoy specials, deals & party discounts, hear from a special friend of mine about what’s going to be BIG fashion-wise this holiday season. I will be posting more information on next weeks night out, but plan on swinging in…they get their holiday shipment on Tuesday night and will have it ready for us on Wednesday! Exciting holiday stuff!

Cleveland Consignment Shoppe Grand Re-Opening – Next week, November 20 from 5-8pm go over to Woodmere (Golovan building next to Davis Bakery across from Eton on Chagrin) and check out the new location of this amazing resale shop. Looking for your Louboutins for the holidays?  You just might find a pair of luxury shoes, a warm designer coat or some glitz and glamour for the holiday season.

Have a great weekend everyone! Cheers to gorgeous fall weather. :)

This Thursday she will be discussing with us the significance of color we choose for various projects and how it impacts our emotions…stuff’s gonna get real deep people. Would you and a friend like to go hear Eve chat about color? Tweet me “@iheartclev I’d love tickets to @mocacleveland color talk with @EEAshcraft on Thursday!” Winner to be drawn on Wednesday, October 23rd by noon. Good luck!

Also on Thursday (perhaps on your way to MOCA) Room Service in Ohio City is hosting a fall/winter vintage soirée with the help of Paprika Vintage!
