  Cleveland is for Lovers!

Hello friends and happy hearts week to you! I’m loving all of the pinks and reds in my Instagram this week and can’t wait for even more in the upcoming days.

My London sister-Rebecca is hosting a fashion challenge called #shadesoflove2019…basically dress in red, pink or purple for the next week, hashtag your pics and be entered to win a prize! I’ve been playing along and amazed by all the clothes I own that actually are these girly, lovely hues. I hope to see a bunch of Clevelanders playing along this week!

A few days ago I got together with a few friends to celebrate the new-ish holiday we’ve all come to know as “Galentines.” We sipped champagne at the new Flight Cleveland Wine Bar and enjoyed a small charcuterie platter paired with cupcakes and macarons by Kelsey Elizabeth Cakes. The afternoon highlight was having our Tarot cards read by the lovely Shibahni of Bombay Taxi Boutique, complete with surprise gifts of bling-bling and makeup treats from Kimberley of Smitten in Cleveland! It’s so fun to have gal pals like these two who are always ready for a quick afternoon party. I just read a stat (or was it a Pinterest post? ha!) that said women live longer when they spend quality time with their girlfriends two times a week. Cheers to spending more time with your girlfriends in 2019!

What is everyone doing for Valentines Day this week? Me and Mr. C have a long-standing tradition of going to lunch on the holiday to avoid the night time extravaganzas. We meet up; typically in Tremont and have a nice lunch date to celebrate the holiday and then spend the evening at home and relaxing with our little family, super casual and sometimes over take out.

This year, along with our day date,  we are doing something special with another couple, not actually on the actual Valentines Day but the 15th; Friday. Last year, before the holidays we bought tickets to the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad; Dinner on the Train with Spice. Dinner will be served on their newly acquired California Zephyr silver Solarium and Silver LariatVista Dome train cars. I am really looking forward to being on the train for the evening, spending time with our good friends over great food and cocktails. Spice does not disappoint so I am sure this will be no different. Winter-spring dinner on the train tickets are currently sold out, but look for the summer tickets going up for sale soon!

So in case, you didn’t get it from my posts above, I really HEART Valentines’ day, I love girly evenings out with friends, I love special lunches with my main squeeze and spending time at home is great too. Have a wonderful Valentines Day week everyone. I LOVE you!

  a CLE summer guide!

It’s always fun to make those summer to-do lists and challenge ourselves to check things off one at a time. Between hanging out at the beach, afternoons at the pool, if you have a friend who has a boat that is a plus and then there are cookouts, late night ice cream adventures and summer fun 5k runs you can always find exciting happenings around Cleveland, especially in the summer!

I tried my best to compile a few of my recent go-to’s for dinner, drinks and summer fun below. Take a look, check them out, let me know what I am missing on this Cleveland summer guide. Enjoy & happy summer everyone!

• TO DINE & DRINK •

PLum_6

The Plum Kitchen & Bar : This new watering dining (& drinking!) destination is so pretty that from the moment you walk into the space you feel like you have traveled around the globe and discovered a hidden gem…right here in our backyard. The creative cocktails and family style meals will have you wanting to go back time and time again, so grab your friends and check out the plum. Try and get a seat on the pink bench or the patio, both my favorite spots.

Ninja City : I love this east-side, hot spot for asian-fusion carry out and a swanky cocktail while I wait for my order to be ready! I always order a sampling of their steamed buns and a fun mojito-like summer cocktail. If you like a fresh green-papaya salad, chili garlic wings or Bahn Mi Sandwich, give the team at Ninja City a visit.

Pier W : If you are looking for an incredible, fine dining experience and perhaps the best view of Cleveland and Lake Erie grab an adirondack chair on the deck of Pier W. During happy hour you can sit in the sun while enjoying a summer cocktail (Moscow Mule anyone?) and a few fresh oysters.

Banter Cleveland  : If you love a good french fry, have you tried poutine yet? The perfect combination of fries, gravy and a touch of sweet. I admire the simple chic interiors of this hot spot and even better I love that they have a little store inside where you can bring home a bottle of Rosé or beer for your porch parties. I also enjoy sitting at their bar and indulging in a summer drink after a day at Edgewater Beach…I especially love a good dark ‘n stormy! Banter makes theirs with Crabbie’s Alcoholic Ginger Beer and I love when I order a drink and it is not all watered down with ginger ale. Crabbie’s comes to the CLE from Edinburgh, Scotland. They steep real ginger for over 6 weeks before blending it with the other 4 secret ingredients in order for us to enjoy the first “hard soda” on the market. Give it a try next time you are at Banter!

Spice Kitchen & Bar : Chef Bebenroth and his team of farm to table experts make visiting Spice a memorable experience. The recently just expanded behind the restaurant to include a wonderful patio and bar area for your summer celebrations. Clusters of outdoor couches, a great hardwood bar and lots of herbs and potted plants has this outdoor space one of my go-to places for meeting up with friends this summer. Plus, their bartenders mix an incredible drink…ask them for something with ginger beer or whiskey in it and they will produce a unique flavor that will have you wanting to return to Spice to see what they will come up with next!

Pub Frato : in the mood for a day trip to the Mentor Headlands or Fairport Harbor? While you are there, go check out this authentic gastrobub for awesome cocktails, great cold beers and don’t miss their truffle fries!!! (They are also participating in Crabbie’s Week so ask for their special RNC Red Cocktail…more at the end of this post)

• THINGS TO DO •

41 Degrees North : In the summertime I love to get outdoors and enjoy our incredible weather and water. No boat? No problems. You can visit the crew at 41 Degrees North (at the Yack Shack) nested in the Cleveland Metroparks Rocky River Reservation for all sorts of Kayak and stand up paddle board rental needs. The team will get you outfitted for a morning on the river or the lake depending on your confidence level and I’m telling you, it is one of the best summer experiences around. Truly makes living close to such a Great Lake accessible and is a wonderful activity for a group of friends or family to enjoy summertime outdoors together.

Kendell Ledges in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park : If you are looking to escape the city and get outdoors for a morning, head south to my ultimate favorite outdoor hiking spot around town, the Kendell Ledges. These massive rock formations were created millions of years ago and span over 2 miles long and about 30 feet high. Covered in a vibrant green moss, these rock walls make you feel like you have stepped onto a set of Jurassic Park, they are just incredible. This shaded park would make for a wonderful weekend destination for a picnic with your pals. If you’ve lived here all your life or just visiting for the weekend, seriously, go explore Kendell Ledges, I promise you are in for a treat.

The Westside Market : This market has been featured all over the place, but it truly is one of Cleveland’s most cherished community hot spots, food shopping mecca’s and an architectural gem. If you are visiting this summer make sure to stop at Cleveland’s public oldest market home to 100 vendors offering meats, seafood, fruits, vegetables, baked goods, dairy, flowers, ready-to-eat foods, spices and nuts….plus while you are there grab a crepe or a polish sausage sandwich, you won’t leave hungry!

The Cleveland Museum of Art : Celebrating their 100th year, this global art institution is one of my ultimate favorite places to take my family and out of town guests to visit time and time again. The museum is FREE and open to the public and the most recent renovations have guests still stopping to stare…you can’t miss the incredible new atrium. While you are enjoying art, you can also stop for a snack…or a cocktail at their restaurant Provenance. Take a moment and enjoy the Contemporary Art Collection the museum has, I can’t get enough of the big Marilyn Monroe, Warhol piece.

Tremont : This little pocket of Cleveland has incredible shopping and boutiques like Banyan Tree and Evie Lou. Plus it is home to incredible bars and restaurants. If you are visiting Cleveland, make sure to include a few hours to explore this neighborhood and the many churches and interesting architectural masterpieces. I love walking around here on a friday night before we decide on what the weekend has in store for us…especially on the second Friday of the month where they host, Walk About Tremont…check it out!

The Cleveland Flea : This monthly flea martket of over 100 vendors is a must-do during the summer in Cleveland. Filled with many makers and vintage enthusiasts, this show is seriously and incredible vshopping destination in our city. Don’t miss the next “FLEA” Saturday, August 13th. See you there!

  Our CLE Village Dinner

Spice-107_lr

Happy Thanksgiving week everyone. Are you ready for the festivities filled with family, friends and of course, food galore? This year I am looking forward to spending time with some great friends, relaxing and really being thankful for all that we have, especially our health and the health of our loved ones.

Spice-32_lr

Today I want to share the gorgeous images from our I Heart Cleveland, Spice Acres and The Village Magazine dinner taken by the talented Aster & Olive Photography.

Spice-29_lr

It was the perfect fall evening, the leaves had changed colors, there was a brisk chill to the air and about twenty Cleveland moms had gathered at Spice Acres thanks to our hostess Jackie Bebenroth and her husband Chef Ben.

Spice-21_lrWe gathered among the pines for a cup of  warm spiced cider, some marinated olives and fresh popped popcorn. We toured the farm learning about the piglets, sustainable farming practices and how chickens lay eggs. We talked about why it is important to try and feed our families locally grown produce and locally raised meats and dairy. We acknowledged that each of us were busy moms and that by making small changes in how we feed our families we could feel better knowing our children would grow up appreciating the idea of good food grown locally.

  Fall happenings!

photoHello and happy BROWNS WIN to all. Thanks Hoyer & team, you guys were amazing! What an incredible fall weekend we had. I hope you were able to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and fall happenings.

Saturday I hit up the Flea with a pit stop into the Indigo Imp Brewery. Thanks to the owners for mixing up this creative fall shandy for me…part Old City Soda in Grapefruit and part Blonde Bomshell, makes a wonderful fall afternoon treat. Never been to Indigo Imp? Check out their listing of brewery events to find out when you can swing in for a sample of their small batch brews.

If you weren’t able to hit up the flea, the Sunday Market in Hingetown hits West 29th and Detroit this upcoming weekend…Sunday from 10am-4pm. I am planning on stopping by the parisian-style street fest post Harness Cycle’s first annual “Running the Bridges” road race. While I am not planning on actually running the race (not there yet,) Baby Ninja and I are going to cruise along with the baby jogger and enjoy being out and about in downtown CLE. Are you interested in the race? Check out the registration page to secure your spot.

To continue the fall weekend fun we packed the car with a few 8 year olds and headed south to explore Mapleside Farms and their fall festival. If you’ve never been it truly is a magical fall experience. From Corbo’s apple fritters to a massive “bounce cloud” (think bounce house without walls on sand) to all sorta of apples and don’t forget elaborate face painting and a paintball zombie hayride. If you are looking for a well-oiled, fall festival machine (plus a few caramel apples) head down to the farm this upcoming weekend, fingers crossed for another great weather weekend.

While the weekend was amazing, I’m really looking forward to this upcoming weekend farm dinner with friends at the Spice Acres Farm nestled in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The proceeds from this dinner will go to help the Bebenroth Family as they repair and “grow” the farm. You can either buy tickets to the entire dinner or for just the after hours bonfire and marshmallow roast. For details visit the event brite page and to learn more about their efforts watch their kickstarter video, it is so well done.

So needless to say, it was a busy and fun fall weekend…but if you are looking to immerse yourself in the fall fun, there is still plenty to look forward to. Go get your apples and pumpkins on. Happy fall everyone.

  Spice Brunch!

photo 1

Last weekend my parents came to visit us Baby Ninja for the weekend. While they didn’t mind dining on pre-made burritos and babysitting their grandson on Saturday night, they were ready to go out and experience the Cleveland culinary scene for Sunday morning brunch.

It was super exciting to us that we just happened to see on Spice Kitchen & Bars Facebook page…they were beginning to serve Sunday brunch the following morning.

We kicked off fancy brunching with a few “Sunday-Funday” (a new term for my parents) breakfast cocktails along with an order of their homemade beignets so, so delightful! (photo above)

photo 5

Myself and my mom (aka Nana) enjoyed the Shakshuka; a baked eggs and charred tomatoe breakfast dish (above.) The others had Killbuck Mushroom Hash (below) and Dixie Benedict (below) including pork belly, poached eggs and spicy hollandaise sauce. Everything was so yummy, unique and way more special than the typical mimosa brunch…but let’s not kid ourselves there is always room for those too.

photo 2photo 4So next time you are looking for something a bit more special when you are brunching with friends and family I highly advise checking out the new brunch at Spice Kitchen and Bar. To explore the entire brunch menu visit here…scroll down a few pages.

Happy Thursday, happy brunching everyone.
