A night around the campfire, sponsored by Wayfair

wayfair_campoutHey friends! With the weather temps dropping and the leaves starting to turn, the feeling of fall is officially here. From our new home we hear the high school marching band practicing their tunes every morning, another sign of fall fun.

One thing I love to do in the cooler months is spend a weekend evening all cuddled around an outdoor bonfire, toasting marshmallows or enjoying a warm cup of mulled cider. Add a few friends and perhaps a card game and together we can all welcome in fall with a campout-hangout.

I’ve compiled a few quintessential fall campout-hangout products from my friends at Wayfair that I hope you will like. Many of them would be the perfect accessory to any night around the campground with friends.

I love their campfire cooking tripod to keep your cider warm…or caramel for dipping apples slices in.

Their hunter green folding camping chairs would make the best chair/table combo so you had a place to put all your goodies while you hung out at the campfire. Same goes for the indoor/outdoor poufs, a few of those and you could seat a bunch of pals for an evening of fall shenanigans.

While it might not be designed for outside-use this gray tapestry wall hanging might need to be part of my fall home accessories. It’s kinda perfect don’t you think? Of course you could also take it outside and drape it around your summer chaise. Speaking of not quite outdoors…but still warm and cuddly is this pretty, yellow, cotton cashmere throw blanket…bring it outside for a fall night but plan many wintery evenings on the couch with this one!

To keep the hot cider warm I found these adorable “camping is “InTents” mugs. As another nod to fall the leaf pillow would look great in many different rooms in your home.

No fall, outdoor campout celebration would be complete without a nod to the garden gnomes and mushroom everywhere. One ornamental garden mushroom makes your campsite happy and welcoming for all the little woodland creatures!

So those are just a few fun, fall campground things that you might like to add a touch of fall both indoors and out. Have a great weekend and happy fall everyone!

It feels so good now that spring has arrived. On the warmer days we have been cracking the windows and letting that fresh air take over our home, it’s delightful. The trees outdoors are blooming and you can actually hear the birds singing when you wake up in the morning. For me, spring is also a great time to freshen up our bathroom. Perhaps because it is a small room and with a few new bath accessories, you can feel like it is a totally new and clean space.

Recently “Toddler Ninja” likes to look at books and play with his toys in the bathroom while I am getting ready for work each morning. It is so awesome to see him starting to really engage with his imagination. The other morning he took a washcloth and put his bunny Pez candy dispenser “nite nite” on the edge of the tub…it was so cute. He is also really into books more and more…this one is really special to us as his Auntie from London recently sent that over to us, he loves pointing at all the people on and off the bus. Side note…I AM GOING TO BE AN AUNT! Congrats Auntie Becca & Uncle Frans…we can’t wait to visit and ride those double decker bus in the fall after the new baby arrives. Exciting…I digress…

Anyhow, the other day I was looking at our towels and sheets and they all seems to have this blue tint to them, I’m not sure how, but perhaps a pair of blue jeans slipped into the whites? Hmm…enter these new GORGEOUS towels and bathmat from Wayfair to my spring bathroom refresh. Seriously, I didn’t really realize how much a new fresh white mat and coordinating towels could make the little space more fresh and clean for spring. Plus this new bathmat makes for a more fluffy play space while mamma puts on her morning mascara…now to keep the morning granola bar and milk off the fancy new rug….

Thanks Wayfair for this awesome spring treat for our bathroom and a SET FOR ONE LUCKY READER!!! Would you like a new WHITE, fluffy, slip proof bathmat, two big fluffy white towels, 2 coordinating hand towels and matching washcloths? I’ve got a bright, fresh set ready to pass along to one lucky reader. To enter to win just tweet me “@iheartcleve I’d love to win a little @Wayfair love as part of our spring #bathroomrefresh” Winner to be selected by Thursday April 6th! Good luck to you.

Happy Spring! Happy weekend Cleveland! Happy bathroom refresh!

A cherry sweet for dessert…or breakfast!

11Did you know I love to bake? Pre-baby Ninja I used to bake dozens and dozens of all sorts of cupcakes. I also used to design individual sugar cookie creations which I would wrap up and giveaway as a special something to friends and family. I love to bake. Currently I am in a phase of my life that makes it challenging to slave over each cookie for :15 plus minutes. Running studio Chartreuse (our design firm,) raising our son and making time for friends, family and Mr C. baking (& fancy cooking in general) has taken the back burner in order of importance.

With all that said, I still love to bake and especially during these (sorta) chilly months I find myself scouring the foodie magazines, Pinterest and old recipe files for easy, yet delicious sweet treats.

Did you know that February is National Cherry Month? Yep, neither did I. So a few weekends ago when we were invited to our friends house for an exquisite Valentine’s Day dinner I knew that baking something with cherries in it might be a fun exercise. Did you know that finding fresh cherries is actually pretty challenging around this time of the year…even though it is Cherry Month…enter frozen and canned dark bing cherries.

I decided to make a few cherry clafouti’s to bring over to their home for an after dinner sweet. If you’ve ever had a clafouti you know that in general they are light, airy and fluffy pancake/omlet-like structures that typically include many eggs and lots of cherries.

I made a few individual ramekin clafouti’s using the canned cherries to bring with us for the Valentine’s dinner and then with the leftover batter and canned cherries I made a large skillet clafouti for our Valentine’s Day breakfast at home. I love to experiment when I am creating a dessert, no one typically complains that something is too sweet or has too many cherries or too much chocolate…right?

Have you ever made a clafouti? Seriously is is such an impressive desert that is both light and rich, sweet and tangy (thanks to the sugar and tart cherries!) and an overall crowd pleaser.

Want to make one? I am including the ingredients and directions below in case anyone else wants to get in on the baking action this month. Enjoy!

• 1 1/4 cups milk
• 2/3 cup sugar, divided
• 3 eggs
• 1 tablespoon vanilla
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 cup flour
• 3 cups cherries, pitted (fresh, frozen or canned!)
• powdered sugar, for garnish

• Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
• Using a blender, combine the milk, 1/3 cup sugar, eggs, vanilla, salt and flour, and blend.
• Lightly butter an 8-cup baking dish, a few ramekins or a skillet, and pour a 1/4-inch layer of the blended mixture over the bottom.
• Place dish into the oven for about 7-10 minutes, until a film of batter sets in the pan but the mixture is not baked through. Remove from oven (but don’t turn the oven off, yet).
• Distribute the pitted cherries over the set batter in the pan, then sprinkle with the remaining sugar. Pour the remaining batter over the cherries and sugar.
• Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 60 minutes, until the clafouti is puffed and brown and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
• Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve warm.

Servings: 6-8 for dessert, 4 for breakfast.

Let me know if you give this a try or if you have any other simple winter desserts that are a “must try!”

Cactus Makes Perfect Party with Joann Stores

Hello everybody. I am sorry I’ve been late to post my recap of my recent travels to Salt Lake City and the 2015 Alt Summit but myself and Baby Ninja have been so so sick. I mean this flu has hit our home hard and I didn’t even see it coming. Luckily yesterday I was on the mend and while we are staying low this weekend I am doing met best to get caught up with organizing all the Alt fun to share with you.

While I will share an overall conference recap (next week for sure!) I thought I would start the fun by sharing a fun project I have been working on since last year… the “Cactus Makes Perfect” Alt Summit mini party.

All photos were taken by my talented conference roommate Meg Tsang Photography unless otherwise noted. If you are ever in Alabama and in need or a highly talented wedding and event photographer, give Meg a call. A newlywed herself, she is just such a joy to be around. Funny, silly and welcoming Meg is a teacher to all. Thanks Meg!

Back in October, I was chosen as party designer alongside my co-hostesses Kim of Design Life Kids and Andrea of Legal Miss Sunshine to plan and produce one of the Friday night conference parties. It was Andrea’s winning idea of a quirky, cactus networking party that caught the eye of the judges and provided each of us a free ticket to the conference in exchange for producing the party bash.

Cleveland’s own Joann Stores was sponsoring the event and the crafter in me was giddy with excitement to see how this theme would come to life. While I am not necessarily DIY blogger this Cleveland designer can hold her own especially when it comes to pulling off a good party. Let the crafting party begin!

Being that the three of us party hosts were from all over…west coast, midwest and east coast, we would “meet” on Monday nights via Skype and plan our attack. Who would do what part, how we would go about creating various party elements and various other tangents. Over the course of a few months we managed to get it all done, designed, made and shipped across the country just in the nick of time.

As the conference is about connecting and collaborating; our party focused on “turning cactI into cactUS!”  We hung painted oil drip pans, made little gold magnets and encouraged attendees to put their cards up and take cards of other attendees they wanted to meet or collaborate with. It was a great ice breaker, conversation starter and overall a wonderful area to meet other like-minded entrepreneurs.

Andrea and I designed cactus-centric temporary tattoos for the party goers to put on or take home. If you’d like to know how she has a great tutorial on her blog, check it out!

We offered guests prizes including the adorable cactus neon sign, cactus pillow and wooden cactus children’s balancing toy from Wayfair.com as well a few other Etsy artist finds. To view all the entries visit Instagram hashtag #cactusmakesperfect!

I designed and sewed various cactus pillows to use as photo props. They were a bit hit! Cactus looking on one side and funky mod pattern on the flip side – the black and white pattern fabric was from the Nate Berkus collection found at Joann’s.

Overall the party was a complete success. Seems like everyone enjoyed themselves, made a few new connections and took home lots of prickly fun from our bash. Thanks to Alt Summit for the great opportunity and to Joann Stores for sponsoring the exciting evening. Wonder what party we will dream up next?
